Actually, fortune can be used for getting flint out of gravel and clay.
But with Infinity on a bow flint is useless, and that is one of the first things I get before I start my regular gameplay; I didn't even make any arrows when I started my current world, only using one flint to make a flint and steel, and only one ever needed. It is also a problem (especially Fortune III, 100% flint drop rate), if you want to mine gravel for gravel.
As for myself, any enchantment that I don't want is bad, and this happens a lot because I enchant books so I can choose just what enchantments I use, which is particularly important when you use mod items that are very difficult to obtain; if you think diamond is rare, I've mined over a dozen times more diamond ore than amethyst ore, they also have the same very low enchantability as a book, and putting on more than two enchantments makes them too expensive to repair (and only one unit at a time at that).
(this is also why the repair changes in 1.8 are game-breaking to me, currently I can just rename my stuff and repair them forever at a high - but fixed - cost, very manageable, but renaming no longer fixes the cost so I'd have to enchant new items. Of course, I don't have to play in 1.8 and actually still play in 1.6.2, never even bothered with 1.6.4)
BTW, Fortune does NOT work on clay, which always drops 4 pieces of clay no matter what, similar to how glowstone never drops more then 4 dust (Fortune does affect the latter, averaging closer to 4, but Silk Touch is preferable as you get a 1:1 ratio if you are mining glowstone for glowstone blocks and not dust; that said, a Fortune (or Silk Touch) shovel works on glowstone as it doesn't have a specific tool).
I was trying to get my main sword, the one I would use forever after finishing off my diamond set. I had acquired a little over 90 XP levels to help in this pursuit. What did I get on it?
Bane of Arthropods IV. All three times.
I used LAN to switch into creative where rage drove me to keep enchanting new diamond swords until I got an acceptable enchant.

My avatar-Madison Gotha. She knows various weapons, she's a mage/sage, and is somewhat immortal. Madison has the capability of taming and communicating monsters, a genetic trait passed down by her father. 26 physically, 1400-something mentally, and a Lofty Peakian/Zenithian mix. Doesn't really like being called an elf and hates being called human..
I might be Moderator, but don't bother treating me too special. And don't make tons of Ban Hammer jokes, please. Also, I'm an Off-Topic only Mod. Don't ask me to lock a thread or something if it's not in the off-topic
Pretty sure I got Fortune II on a pickaxe once or twice. I know a while back I got a really crap run of enchantments, now whenever I do a 30 lev enchantment, I copy my game save 3 times and load each one in turn and do the enchantment, then continue with the one that gives the the best enchantment. Cheating I know, but in my mind balances things out a bit for me; I don't always get a great enchantment out of the three anyway, but usually one of them is better and more usable than the other two ....
Revolutionaries wait, for my head on a silver plate. Just a puppet on lonely string, oh, who would ever want to be king?

What's wrong with unbreaking 3 on a diamond pickaxe? I burn through these and are constantly repairing them but it does help to have efficiency with it. You must not do much mining.

Yes, I'd love to get Unbreaking III. Then you just need a couple dozen books with Level 1 enchants and you can put all the Efficiency on the pickaxe you want. But Unbreaking is much harder to get.
What is the worst enchantment you got?
WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU WANT A SHOVEL WITH FORTUNE!?!?
...flint from clay?
I mean clay from clay blocks.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
lol
