Since I'm woefully scant on protein sources (except fish) on a one-biome ocean world, I have been trying everyhing I can think of to keep some of the jockey chickens that survive from my MOB farm around. Although these apparently do not lay eggs, I have been told they can breed and give fully functioning chicks. So far I have never succeeded in keeping one long enough to pair it up in hopes of breeding some others. After hanging aound a bit they just disappear leaving either nothing or a carcass and some feathers. I even managed to transport one back to my home base in the world-spawn chunk and fed it some seeds but it also vanished.
Do I have a chance on this and if so, what must I do?
In it, I learned that a jockey's chicken won't lay eggs, but if you do manage to breed a pair, the offspring will. To keep them around, you should use a name tag to stop them from de-spawning and, due to MC-2025—which the community fixed several years ago—I would suggest holding them in a two-glass-block-thick pen until you manage to breed a number of them. Like all important mobs, from horses to villagers.
Good luck!

Lots of good ideas here. Particularly like the renaming a stack of tags for 1 XP level.
Have never had any trouble losing chickens on other worlds where I have built auto chicken farms, but will check about the glass walls. Main trouble is my MOB farm is up at level 190 a long way from my home base and To get the chickens to my home island I must push them into the ladder shaft then pop a boat under them after they get to sea level so I can only do 1 at a time.
I'm willing to try the leashes, but since I'm on a 1 biome ocean world there's no swamp and I haven't been able to find a slime chunk yet. The app apparently doesny work right on custom worlds. so I basically just keep hunting in the rooms I clear for other things hoping one will intersect a slime chunk.
Well, you really only need 2 chickens to get a new chicken farm started, or 1 if you've already bred normal chickens and don't mind waiting around for the eggs.
Or a few stacks of eggs if you build a chicken farm at the mob farm.
So you could either take 1 chicken at a time, I expect you go back and forth every once in a while anyway, or take the eggs.
Wandering traders appear from time to time towing a pair of llamas on leashes. Since his trades will never unlock once being locked, after you've bought whatever you can from him, kill him and his llamas and now you've got a pair of leashes.

Name tag?
Mintutor now works in 1.13!
MrKite & Mc_Etlam ... I salute you!
Hadn't thought about that. I'm sort of old-school, and have actually never used a name tag for anything. I'll try it the next time I get a survivor.

You need to rename the name tag on an anvil before you can use it.

They are still stackable after renaming as long as they have the same name.
Also you can rename an entire stack for just 1 XP level.
Just testing.
You might find something interesting in my thread, FrozenCore: Hardcore Death; 3/20/15 to 5/3/15; Eight Weeks on a Frozen World in Pictures. It takes place on a Frozen River single-biome world.

As others have said, jockey chickens do despawn, unlike other passive mobs.
I also recommend glass on the inside walls of their pen, but a single layer seems to work for me.
You're right; I do double-thick for villagers just because of zombies. Not needed for others.

Use leashes, last I tried multiple mobs could be towed behind a boat at full speed with no risk of breaking the leashes.

Though that was a few updates ago and I only used it on cows.
