I was running 1.5.2 for a while because I was never able to update the launcher or find the files for the launcher that runs the versions of minecraft. just a little details before getting to the actual post.
Okay, so I'm on my survival world, I have my house and coords set up at an NPC village 6000 meters away from the spawn. I needed some XP so for the first time in a while i put it on easy, and I noticed right away that witches can now spawn everywhere, (i really need to catch up on what i miss)
But anyway, I fired a couple of arrows at it, I attacked it with a iron sword a few times, nothing.
I had full iron armor on and the witch killed me, like i had no armor on at all.
Is there any suggestions or strategies on fighting witches? i came very unprepared.
Potions ignore armour, so it might be a good idea to hang back and use a bow, preferably with power and punch, to kill the Witch quickly and keep it far enough away that it won't be able to hit you. A bucket of milk on your hotbar wouldn't go amiss, as drinking it will remove all current effects (both positive and negative).
A Witch will attempt to use a potion if hurt(instant health), on fire(fire resistance), trapped underwater(water breathing). If you're forced to attack with a sword, do so quickly and don't stop until it's dead. The range of potions it throws is at best 9 blocks, so knockback on your sword isn't recommended.
I'm not going to retread what has been said above although I will again state; potions completely ignore armor. Whether it's none or diamond, it doesn't matter. So your goal is to kill the witch as fast as you can taking as few hits as possible.
Take cover behind a tree or something to get out of witch's range. The witch will not try to shoot over the blocks but instead will walk straight over to you so you can quickly finish her in a few hits. This also works for skeletons too! You can also rush her. As a range mob, once you get up in her face, she's a goner.

I am currently lurking more than I am posting. I haven't gone anywhere.
I stay out of aggro range and basically hammer them with a bow and arrow. They drop pretty easily that way and if you do aggro them keep out of potion tossing range for them and hammer them with the bow and arrow.
If you're using a bow, you have to fire arrows in quick succession as they use health/regen potions to recover.
Not really, I've brought witches down with vanilla bows and arrows. No enchants or nothing in the current production patch level. Even after they already pelted me with potions and such. Takes a little longer but staying out of their attack range let me hammer them down with focused shots pretty nicely.
You're obviously a good archer then! I was trying to kill a witch in a ravine yesterday - she moving in and out of sight. I reckon I must've hit with 6 arrows (power 3) before killing her. I could see the little potion bubbles popping off.
Yeah the last witch I faced off against was in a double ravine. I just landed there from a portal from the nether and was setting out base torches and she started tossing them from across the way when I got too close to the edge. I stayed back and pelted her with a few full power shots on an unenchanted bow and knocked her dead. She had bubbles too so I know she was hitting the bottle herself between attacks.
From my experience, witches are pretty easy to kill with a sword(diamond). I just rush them and spam the A button(my left click). Bow and arrow, it really all depends if you have accuracy. Which, I find pretty bad :3
Once in a lava pool beneath my house there was a witch. There were no other naturally blocks for her to spawn. Just one block for miles around.
I just rush them with any sword and hack them to death, hurt them a bit and they start drinking potions and if you spam hit them with a sword I have found they don't have time to attack between hits... they might poison me as i approach and start attacking them, but that's about it... I've found them quite easy to deal with this way and they never get off more than a single potion (poison) at me..
I would stay away from them if low on health though, I think if you aren't near full they use harming potions instead.
