A quick off-topic update (but relevant to the bug mentioned above). I went ahead and created a "Nether Suit"- diamond armor optimized for the nether (three pieces with Fire Protection IV, one with Projectile Protection IV, boots with Feather Falling and everything with Unbreaking III). I've since harvested another 4+ stacks of quartz blocks (I shudder to think how much more I'm going to need) and went back to play around with the fortress some more.
The short version is that I finally got my netherwart, got some practice fighting blazes and witherskeletons, and nearly got lost even with using markers as I went. Combat in the fortress hallways was a little tricky with ZPM present- not that I was afraid of hitting them (that was pretty easy to avoid) but that I was afraid of killing a blaze that had struck a pigman in the cross fire given the bug above. A little spicy for me- I'm really not that good at combat.
I don't really need anything more from the fortress, but I may go back and clear it out using brute-force techniques. I'm considering plastering the hallways with cobble slabs- this ought to stop witherskeletons and pigmen from spawning in "cleared" areas, but will this work for blazes as well?

Yes. Even flying mobs must spawn on a block. The exception is mob spawner blocks which spawn mobs in air.
r- thanks. I'll probably preserve the blaze spawner(s) and build a ghast-proof shell around them. Seriously off topic, but a quick related question- what does the wiki mean by "they [blazes] can spawn in a 9x9 area around the spawner on the same level, one level higher and one level lower"? By "levels", are they just referring to rooms/corridors directly above and/or below the spawner? This would seem obvious if the 9x9 radius includes the y axis, but then you would think they could spawn *two* "levels" above and below the spawner. Anyways...
Yep, the ZP still attack you if you kill something that hurt them, just confirmed (1.8.8)

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

They spawn in a 9x9 (x * z) volume 3 high (y) centered on the spawner. The y value is the height where their feet are.
