Hello minecraft community! I'm recently getting back into minecraft and I had a fun idea. To start a world in alpha and update it every once in a while going through every major release until I get to the current update. I'm wondering if any of you know if this is possible and what is the earliest version I can start on.
I've never done anything like this, but I do know that with each version that introduces new terrain stuff (eg Temples/Coral reefs etc) then the new stuff will ONLY appear/generate in an old world IF the chunks have never been generated in the first place.
For example if you had explored a 100 x100 area in an Alpha world, then load the world in a newer version - you would need to go exploring further than that to see anything introduced by that new version
(There are 'tricks' to delete existing chunks in an old world so that newer version of MC will regen the chunks with new stuff in - IIIRC PythonGB did a youtube video way back explaining how)
As for 'earliest version' - AFAIK the launcher shows that you can go back all the way to version 'old_alpha rd-132211'

Simple Answer:
Infdev (ver. June 18th, 2010) is the only version of Infdev in the Minecraft Launcher. It is labeled as old_alpha inf-20100618. This is the oldest version available in the Launcher that will allow you to convert it all the way the most current version of Minecraft.
Long Answer:
I actually have a survival thread that is all about this. I started my world on Infdev(ver. June 18th, 2010). From what I can tell, you should be able to use an earlier version of Infdev and have no problems upgrading that as well. I say 'should' because I have not tested this but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Indev is an interesting topic. I've researched about it extensively and the only thing I've come across is this video. Since I have no experience with Indev or MCEDIT, I leave it to you to figure the rest out.
Good luck on your world. I can tell you from experience it is so much fun to continuously upgrade Minecraft from the beginning.
