I thought I'd throw together a quick example :smile.gif:
Here's the exterior of a house design I've had for a while:
Sometimes I like to shorten the porch one block in each direction so I can put a leaf hedge there.
The interior is full of furnishings. Here's a shot of the living room:
Here's an aerial shot of the bedroom:
I find that jukeboxes and small chests add a homey feel to the room. Bookshelves can also improve the general aesthetics of the room.
And a shot of the basement (which has full general-use functionality):
You have storage space and furnaces and workbenches that are hidden from view of the main part of the house.
Sure, it's a little resource heavy, but isn't it worth it for a house that looks this good? :wink.gif:
I hope you guys like my design :smile.gif:
Thats a very nice house you've got there! Good variation between floors, good variety in your design, I like it! It feels very homey and cozy, nice work!
Okay, so it turns out I'm too much of a texture pack ***** to make a tutorial (my build style only really seems to look good in PureBDCraft or Misa's Realistic)
So, I'll just post pictures of my texture pack biased decor here :tongue.gif:
Exterior. Nothing makes a house feel like a home more than an overhanging facade.
Kitchen and dining table. An extended piston makes a nice hardy table. No wimpy clicky tables!
The nook-ish fireplace area. Cozy on up to the fire and stay warm during those cold creeper-infested nights.
Upstairs bedroom. I'm not exactly the best at bed decor so it's a bit awkwardly spacious. Useful for sleepovers, I guess?
Occasionally, I will make a root cellar beneath my homes (accessible from outside) for storing excess materials. Typically, I leave most of the giant furnace arrays to my mine(shaft) base stations so as not to cover my abode in furnaces :tongue.gif:

Im going to start writing a section on advanced building. id be most appreciative if you would answer the poll so I can see what people want/don't want to see done.
Awesome tutorial... You inspired me to turn my ****-shack into an awesome house! Oh and heres one more trick for your tutorial... leaf lining and water make wool houses look amazing:
No. I don't think that looks nice at all, I'd actually say it looks bad. :sad.gif:
The outcroppings don't make the feel of the building any better and it's messy due to the single squares of planks.
I think that removing the outcroppings, of having them on the edge of the building would look much better, and not using cobblestone as the "main"(the foundation and what most of the building is build of) material would enhance the looks of this house. A lot. :tongue.gif:
Note that this is just my personal opinion, though. :smile.gif:
(Of course a larger example of your build could look better, but I just think the one in the picture is ugly.)
The rest of what you built is really nice though, I see that I follow many of the same principles about adding contrast, depth and such to the building as you do. Keep it up :biggrin.gif:
Thank you ive been wondering about decoration im ok at it but still amatuer btw i have question if i may
Do you think this is a good lighting idea i dug two blocks down in my floor put a torch and then put glass over it
so it still is a solid part of the floor like this

Thats a good way to make out of the way lighting, I use it sometimes.
Lava in the hole also works well, and its brighter than torches. Just dont burn the house down.
Awesome tips BenJ! I'm acually excited to try and make my hidey hole into something more pleasing to look at! Usually I just have the sturdy-but-oh-so-boring-to-look-at cobblestone cube house!
