Been wandering around my world for the last few days just seeing the sights and I found a really high mountain in the savannah (world generated originally in 1.64 but I'm exploring chunks that are new in 1.74).
I climbed to the top of the mountain, and then to the top of the highest tree and my Y is about 213. That is the highest point I've come across in my world. I'm wondering what the highest point YOU have found in your standard non-Amplifed world.
After I'm done exploring, I think I'm going to go back and build something on top of that mountain.
And the view down
And one with debug screen up, I'm on top of the highest tree on the mountain with a y of 213.
and on my journey [around 10k from home now] I finally found a mushroom Island. for some reason I'm disappointed now as I don't know what to do with it, lol.

I spawned on the side of a pinnacle at 15, 209, -21.
Standing on the top of one of the treeless pinnacles my feet are at y=218 and 219 on the other.
Standing on the top of the tree on the other pinnacle my feet are at y=220.

Here's a view: (Note that I was at y=100 when I captured that image)

That's not possible. The maximum height where a block can be placed is Y: 255 (Or 256, around that number)
I once found something like this. Imagine using this as your home. You could have stairs leading up and down the mountain or you could live inside.
I think I would need to either have a minecart track going up or an elevator of some type. walking up a 150 block high staircase just to get to my house all the time sounds brutal... :-)
I'd definitely have to move my beacon over there to get some serious haste going... I dug an 11x11 pit down to bedrock in my castle and that took forever. It would be some serious grinding to hollow that mountain...
Then I'll need to put a watchtower on the peak and an internal minecart/piston elevator to get to the very top....

255 or 256 is the highest altitude that vanilla world generation will go to.
At the time this thread was created (version 1.7), terrain generation had just changed, and the then-new shattered savanna biome (which was the example given in the first post) was the only non-amplified location that might generate that high. Not even extreme hills would generate that high to my knowledge.
Ever since 1.18, terrain generation changed again. The build limit was increased 64 blocks to 320, but the vanilla terrain still sort of still has a soft cap at 255 or 256. But "mountains" replaced extreme hills and they will also generate up to 255 or 256, and probably more commonly than shattered savannas will. Sometimes, a dense enough concentration of mountains will result in the top being abruptly cutting off and looking flat, making it look like the tip of the mountain was sliced off, so these are places where the terrain might have gone higher were it not for that limit being in place.

I though the maximum was 256 or something like that?
I know the max build-height is 255 (I've tried to build above it to no avail) but I don't know if there is a generation max.

Interesting thought....

If you're having performance concerns with Minecraft, I hope this may prove useful.
