So I know that the compass points to where you spawn but is their a way to change it. I want to go exploring but im afraid im going to get lost and lost all my stuff. Is their a way where I can make it point to my house?
Your best hope is to create a map at your desired spawn point (using said compass). That way, the direct centre of your map is where you created it. It's distance from which it can find the centre from is limited, but it's better than having to use something like single player commands or mcedit to change your original spawn point (which is the only way to change the compass's direction).
Wrong. There is no way to change it. A compass is kind of useless unless you build and live at your spawn point.
Actually I believe you can change it with beds but when you sleep you need to die and then the compass moves to the bed.
Please correct me if I am wrong...

I have found that the direction the compass is pointing will change after going into the nether with it. There is a simple fix to this problem, all you must do is get rid of the compass pointing in the wrong direction and any other compasses pointing in that direction. Then log out of your world, go back into the same world and make a new compass. The new compass should point at the place it did before entering the nether. Some steps may not be necessary, but all in all should fix the problem.
I hope this helps anyone having the same problem I have had.
i had a problem that my compass stopped pointing to my original spawn location and instead pointed to the middle of a forest far away from where it should be pointing. i believe it to be related to riding the horse somehow. what i did to fix that problem is just quit and log back in.
Mine points to the wrong spot after being in the nether. After I quit and load the game again it points to the right spot.
The easiest thing to do is just write down the coordinates of your house from f3. If you think that is cheating then just save them and only use if you are so lost you are ready to rage quit.

I believe you can change your spawn point with MCedit which should change the compass along with it.
Without commands, there is no way to change where the compass points - world spawn, not the spawn of the player holding it. However, it can be made essentially the same if you place a nether portal at spawn, one at your base, and create a protected path between them in the Nether. Unless you live a hundred thousand blocks from spawn, the trip should be short and safe.
