I think that I'll try it. Just one question. How are we supposed to get the grass down to bedrock level? Bone meal doesn't work and building a dirt staircase from ground level to bedrock try to get the grass to spread takes FOREVER. Any thoughts?
you could use invedit to give yourself some grass blocks. i feel like in the spirit of the challenge its not really cheating as long as that's all you use it for

Well, even though it's slow, your ensuring your own survival. We need more challenges that are actually challenging.
hey this sounds fun, i need something to keep me going til 1.8.
Im gna give it a go
Edit:i started! its been fun so far
*journal*
i spent the first two days building my 3 meter thick bunker, i tried to make it out of smooth stone, since you said it had to be "stone" but theres no way i could do it in time, so the two inner layers are cobble and the outside is smooth.
The third day i went searching for 'outside' supplies. I got plenty of flowers and reeds and sand and seeds, i got a bucket of water, lots of wood and all 3 sapling types i even found TWO patches of pumpkins BUT i couldnt find a cactus!! not even one! So i guess i wont be making a cactus farm or anything green while im down there D:
Maybe i spent too long on the bunker, i didnt have enough time to go so far searching, but oh well! Im now about to make my descent, im making a three wide stair case down so its gona be a long dig! But it will be easier to get grass to spread down this way. im not going to cheat in grass blocks! legit all the way!

having so much 'fun' digging out the biodome area! (I use the term 'dome' loosely since i couldnt understand those sphere plans that are going round, so im kind of making a bio-rectangle?) anyway about that 'fun'. Since we're building at bedrock and most lava lake surfaces are on level 12 im getting lots of hot, burning lava falling on my head!! Its GREAT!! hows everyone else dealing with this? im using gravel to fill it in then digging it out again, its slow going.
I spent day one doing two things... first, I cleared a 5x5 hole straight down to bedrock... then built a dirt staircase all way down and lit it up so grass would hopefully grow while I was doing item 2... which was chopping down every single tree in sight.
Day two will be spelunking the 4 cave systems my pit opened and searching for the rare resources on the surface.
Day 3... probably filling in the damn hole. hahahaha.

This will work for very little effort and will be faster than a staircase:
wow, this is quite an old topic. wonder how you guys are doing with your domes if you ever got to finish it.
I started to take this challenge 3 days ago. It is really hard work and really boring after some time because you're always underground and somehow no matter how well lit you keep your dome, some monsters still spawn over sometimes so i'm always looking over my shoulders like some paranoid survivor.
So all in all, yes, this challenge is awesome, i'm using the Last days texture pack too. I'm extremely paranoid and going insane as i try to build my own shelter. building a staircase down to bring in grass was kinda tough but at least i lucked out and my spawn point were close to an NPC village so i could take some carrot, potato and wheat down, as well as cocoa beans and 3 kinds of tree saplings. which got me at least a couple of pigs, a couple of sheep, some eggs(used to luckily make 3 chicken) and a couple of cows.
The underground lava is proving a small annoyance in setting my shelter but i started to use it instead of going against it so i made some awesome canals beneath floor level with some glass. pics will ensue.
Luck also got me close to an underground half-ravine thing, good for tree farming. Got me close to an abandoned mine shaft too.
9/10 would playing this challenge is fun, just kinda boring after a while because there is so much to dig.

Also, grass is half way down my stair case now!

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
