Wow only two? I usually have about 5, hence some of my trouble with them. They can get me close to death even when I'm wearing a full set of fully enchanted diamond armor. I can take them down with a bow pretty well, but it's a bit of a pain to sit there and do that when I could be doing other things. I don't usually use shields because they take up so much of the screen, but maybe I'll start.
UPDATE: Upon reading the wiki more closely, the whole staying-away-from-cats thing is a 1.14 thing. I currently play in 1.13 and really didn't plan on updating.

well, simply sleeping every now and then helps reset the timer of their spawn.
But this thread got me wondering, do phantoms get hurt by cacti?

I don't like giving too much info about the seeds i share. I feel like its better to let others explore and find out the chest contents, dungeon places and biomes. If someone is giving me a gift i would rather not know what it is until i open it for my self.

I would expect they would get hurt by cacti but it wouldn't be too effective because they would just fly up and away. Maybe spiderwebs would help here too.
I looked it up and the Wiki claims that it's almost entirely wooden things that burn (and carpet.) Some manufactured wooden things (e.g. chests) can support flames but do not burn up.

Also would they even try to fly into a cactus?
I don't think their path finding is very advanced, they seem to just dive at the player and fly into anything that gets in their way.

But not cobwebs.
Cobwebs definitely don't burn.
I don't think burning mobs set blocks on fire anyway, just players.

Oh, right!
Burning netherrack was mentioned, but that won't set fire to spiderweb either.
I removed the lava, relight the netherrack and spawned in another phantom that caught fire and died!
Apparently they do catch fire and take damage if they are actually in the fire, the first one must have been staying in the layer above the fire, 2 blocks above the nether rack.
Wow, I thought this thread had died but apparently it kept going XD
So, burning netherrack could technically work, but it's iffy. Lava seems to be a solution, if a way can be devised to get them to fly into it-I'll do some tests when I get the chance, and if I find a good solution I'll post it here and see if you guys can improve it
Alright, so a couple of tests later and here's what I came up with (pics below): essentially a glass box surrounded by lava. The phantoms are apparently so dumb they'll just willy nilly see me and launch themselves into lava. The problems with this are 1) its heckin ugly 2) its rather bulky 3) if the phantoms get it into their head to come at me from the direction of the door, they won't hit lava. I may be able to solve this by creating a mini underground entrance and having the glass box completely surrounded by lava. I'm sure I can make it semi pretty eventually, but does anyone have any ideas on how to slim this down??
Also, cobwebs present problems, hence why I didn't use them. They may not burn with fire spread, but contact with lava and-poof-they're gone. Another problem is given about 10 seconds the phantoms can wiggle their way through them and get to me, if cobwebs are my only protection.
Probably better to get Phantoms where they spawn not where they dive on you. Lava pillars spaced out 35+ blocks above you?
Hmm, maybe so. But if they avoid the pillars in the sky and divebomb me, ive got no ground protection. Guess I could do cobwebs or somethin' on the ground, but doing both seems redundant.
Also, I can't even begin to think of how to work pillars of lava in the sky into a natural design XD
Whoever's idea it was to "just sleep" should have stayed in bed and left everybody else alone. It's not my bedtime, it's your bloody bedtime. When I play Minecraft, I sleep when I want to sleep.

So I was working on this really cool resource pack a while ago, but bad progress nonwithstanding, I think I found something much better... I'm probably gonna never release another custom Minecraft map.Until we meet again...

Well it works for the Nether
As for nailing them on the ground I just had a 5 x 5 x 5 shack constructed of 1/2 cobwebs 1/2 air so I could kill them and collect Phantom membranes. Of course as they slowly oozed into this shelter they could often still get a hit in.

10 seconds is probably good enough to kill phantoms trapped in them. The cobwebs would only be for holding them in place, moreorless keeping them in the lava instead of splashing through it.

They don't splash through lava-soon as they touch it and take damage, they fly away. The cobwebs could be used to keep them in the lava until they die, but honestly usually they burn up in the sky pretty quickly

You could have small lava pillars spaced 1 unit apart around your hidey-hole for a more conservative, tucked-in, decorative look.
If the lava is flowing downwards out of a hole it only tries to spread wide immediately below the lava source block. So have the lava source block tucked up by 2 blocks.
Similarly have the lava flowing into a hole in the ground, and it won't spread when it hits the ground.

That could definitely work. Don't know why I didn't dig a 1 block hole for the lava to fall into XD It's been too long since I've worked with MC lava.
Best way to avert this type of issue is to have your base be underground. Otherwise I have no clue man.
Actually, part of it is inside a hollowed out mountain (or at least it's going to be, its a WIP). I just also wanted an outside area around said mountain where I could wander around, have all my pets wander around freely, and not worry about dying. Alas, looks like it's not really gonna happen. Not completely, anyway.

Might be difficult to do around a mountain, but (presuming MobB will not spawn when the player is below sea level) digging out a large area so one's farms etc were lower would allow a safe outside area. [Requiring only player time and quite a deal of boring fiddle work…]

Wow that is quite a bit. I must say I did have 4 today and yes it is quite annoying as I do not have a roof on my build yet. It can get nuts.

Just testing.
Actually, while burning netherrack may be cool it doesn't seem to do anything to the phantoms.
This guy has been happily flying around here for a couple of minutes now!
Just testing.
Ha ha. The phantom would probably have to be *standing* on the netherrack but, alas, no legs to stand with.
I bet a dip in lava wouldn't be good for them. Want to try?
On a somewhat related topic, magma blocks don't seem to hurt guardians. Even if they are resting on them.
You win that bet, he immediately caught fire and only lasted a few seconds.
Just testing.
