I'm looking for a way to protect a large outside area from phantoms. I'm going to be walling in a large area around my base and protect it from other mobs, but I'm not sure what to do about phantoms. I know sleeping is an option, but is there another way? I've thought about putting a layer of glass somewhere above me, but that would be extremely conspicuous and ugly. Since all this will be outside I can't very well just stand under something. Any ideas anyone?
According to the Wiki they try to stay 16 blocks away from cats but that might take a lot of cats and I'd expect they'd still be annoying even if they stayed far away to not attack you.
If you want to be completely free of phantoms and don't care if it's cheaty (and this is in single player) you could set up a command block in the spawn chunks to teleport them into the void.
Aside from cats, sleeping, and command blocks as suggested above, I don’t really think there’s much you can do about phantoms. They’re not affected by light levels as far as I know.

Just figured out that when I'd turn 8 years old, the 23th of November 2011, my parents could have offered me Minecraft as a birthday gift. Sigh...
Fun but frustrating platformer. Saves me of boredom when I don't feel like playing Minecraft. Knowledge of 8-bit old-school videogames is optional tho'.
You do know that sleeping for just a few seconds every three nights is enough?
You don't have to sleep away the whole night.
Oh really? That helps. I actually often prefer the working at night. Most of the time I only have problems because I don't realize it's been three days and I just walk outside at night and get absolutely bombarded

Theoretically, would putting like a layer of glass at build height work? Phantoms aren't supposed to come after you if you're underneath a block, but I believe they also spawn like 23-40(?) blocks above the players so I'm not sure if it would work
No, glass wouldn't work. It has to be a non-transparent block. It doesn't matter how high or low this block is, so long as you're standing directly underneath it.
MS/MJ went out of their way to implement MobB in such a way that creating safe areas is limited to:
roof the world (or whatever parts thereof one wishes to be active and safe in)
cage cats on posts (assuming this requires ~3 cats per chunk, this would require 867 cats to -proof the 17x17 loaded chunks which is likely to cause a great deal of lag)
sink your base (MobB cannot successfully spawn if the player is below sea level: assuming you don't mind recreating the Netherlands {the area of Europe, not the dimension}, dropping the level of your fields etc below sea level should work.)
comply with the MS/Mj mandated beddie-bye schedule (note: this corporately preferred option does not actually create any safe areas. It also involves spamming beds {or wasting time runnning back and forth} and using an IRL timer to interrupt your play and perform the necessary kowtow. It also means that – when emerging from a long session underground – one may need to waste most of a MC day hovering near a bed waiting for bedtime.)
Most unfortunately, I don't think I've missed anything…
Hopefully a mod will become available the implements MobB in a way more in keeping with how it was teased (and less offensive to certain playstyles).

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.

This is, unfortunately, very helpful. I'll try the cats, and hopefully having so many of them won't create too much lag. My computer handles most things well, but we'll see. If that doesn't work I guess I'll try and work loads of beds into the landscape. The phantom was such a cool mob in concept but now...it's become solely a thing of frustration to me. Alas. I'll try what I can. Thx for all the help everyone
Just because only non-transparent blocks block phantom spawns doesn't mean you have to only build the roof out of them. So long as you include frequent junctions or other points for you to retreat to/afk in you can make the covering as pretty/fancy as you like. Securing the walkways so that existing phantoms can't swoop in to nom on your hopes and dreams is another matter entirely, but apparently their AI is just derpy enough to take clever advantage of so that they end up stuck on your roof/covering (kind of like climbing spiders).

You make a good point, and give a good suggestion. Hmmm. If I'm clever I think I can combine a couple of methods here and work something out. I'll have paths running through my outside area...I might be able to cover them so phantoms don't spawn while I walk on the paths, and also line them with cats for protection against existing phantoms. Little junctions with beds/roofs/cats scattered among the more open spaces might make the area protected enough for me to relax in.
After a quick test in a world of mine, standing next to a cat gave me no protection when the phantoms had their sights set on me. They just attacked me like the cat wasn't even there. Mojang, what was the point of the phantoms avoiding cats if they didn't do it when attacking a player?
My options seem to have dwindled to beds and roofs XD
How many Phantoms are you having? I usually am only getting 2 at a time. A shield helps quite a bit and if you want to fight them backing away from them works well because you can usually bash them with the sword.

Wow only two? I usually have about 5, hence some of my trouble with them. They can get me close to death even when I'm wearing a full set of fully enchanted diamond armor. I can take them down with a bow pretty well, but it's a bit of a pain to sit there and do that when I could be doing other things. I don't usually use shields because they take up so much of the screen, but maybe I'll start.
UPDATE: Upon reading the wiki more closely, the whole staying-away-from-cats thing is a 1.14 thing. I currently play in 1.13 and really didn't plan on updating.
The spiderwebs could definitely prove helpful. Burning netherrack...I think I'd burn down my base. For like the fifth time lol.
I was thinking of having lava pillars. Just have them drop down (from 30 blocks above ground) into a stone container and put some spider webs around them.
It would be amusing to see the annoying phantoms get stuck in a spiderweb while burning up.
But I wouldn't want your base to burn down (again)!

Hmmm...not having to manually kill the phantoms WOULD be nice. I can't seem to find a tutorial on youtube for a phantom trap without manually killing it with a sword. Lava would also provide light to the surrounding area.

Since membrane is only dropped when a kill is credited to a player (including tamed wolves owned by a player) you are unlikely to so so.
Something that killed without generating drops would more likely be described as a form of mob-proofing than a -farm or -trap…

Words of Warning: - You need a software (Clickteam Fusion 2) to run this game.
- The game will probably crash a lot.
- You will rage so much.
- This game is too easy for me. \_(^_^)_/

Ah well, it was worth a thought anyway

Well as for fighting Phantoms make a loose cage out of spiderwebs - not an original idea with me, but it's a lot of fun.
Maybe you can make a Phantom trap out of burning netherrack and spider webs. Don't know if they try to kill golems.

Quitr surprisingly given RL, no.
