So Honestly, this is probably a noob question, but what do you guys do to get rid of water. Like in late game, it's not an issue, simply because you can just use a conduit and breathe underwater. Or if you want to clear out a space, it may be possible to do with Redstone trickery and a ton of sand.
However, in those early game situations what do you guys use to get to the minerals underneath tons of water. This is especially relevant in the 1.13 update because:
1. It seems like caves are submerged more often
2. You drown very quickly, meaning breaking ores underwater is just a waste of time.
Just asking because I had to abandon a couple of veins of iron underneath all that water. Since in my survival series, I found a submerged cave and spent way to long trying to clear out the water.
If all you want is to mine out the minerals, removing the water is overkill.
Assuming you're in early-game sufficiently that water breathing potions are not an option,
an Aqua Affinity/Respiration3 helm will help [Aqua Affinity removes the underwater mining speed penalty, Respiration increases underwater beathing time.]
as will Depth Strider3 boots [Depth Strider removes the underwater movement speed penalty (one third per level).]
If you're in even earlier game, all you actually need are a series of 'breath stations' (air pockets) where you can recharge your bubble (breath) meter.
Using souldsand (or magma blocks & crouching) to produce bubble columns (which are breathable water) is one option, but those blocks may not be readily available at this stage,
Doors (any of the wooden kinds recommended) still displace water when placed [thru 1.13.2] creating pockets of air. [Some other blocks also retain this behavior, but I don't have a comprehensive list handy.]
Two high cane also works, but requires sand or dirt (or variants) to place it on and will spawn mobs unless lit. [It also requires a water souce NEXT TO the block on which it is placed]
If you do need to remove the water, sponges (obtainable only from ocean monuments) are preferred if you have them.
Otherwise placing blocks and removing them so as not to let water source blocks reform is needed.
For doing this manually, I've not found anything better than slime blocks (I do, however, treat a slime farm as an early priority; YMMV)
Various MOSES machines (ie. "Redstone trickery and a ton of sand") are not recommended for the sort of area you show in the picture, both because they require dry headspace and because they are inefficient for small areas (particularly if irregularly shaped). [The amount of time needed to assemble the machine exceeds what simple manual place and break would require.]

Thank you! That was a very comprehensive post, I think my best option is the soul sand. Which I kinda knew something did that, but I couldn't remember what blocks. Or I might do the door trick you mention (replaced torches as they used to work)
When raiding ocean ruins in the early game, I always stand on the edge of a block next to a magma bubble column. If enough of your body is in the column, you get oxygen.
And yes doors. Doors are even better because if you're standing in air you can mine things better (until aqua affinity anyhow.) Sunken ships will usually have a door on the bottom deck (under the trapdoors, and forward I think.)

Wait wat sunken ships have doors? how have I missed this lol. Yeah, the ocean ruins part is interesting, because if your not careful you will just be sucked down into the magma block right?
Considering there is so much ore above sea-level and/or underground but not flooded, I've never found it difficult to ignore an unaccessible source early in game. Deep sunken ships, underwater caves, etc, can easily be passed over until later when I'm better equipped.

You're probably right, I just made the stupid decision of basing on an island, and tbh I rly like caves.

Only the ships that are right side up (and probably upside down ones) have a door leading to the treasure chest.
(You did know that ship wreaks have (up to) 3 chests, right?)
Crouching on a magma block lets you breathe without taking damage though you'd want to move off the magma block to mine, mining while crouching is really slow.

No, I had no clue that ship wreaks can have 3 chests. I had thought that 2 was the max. Also ye I realized that you can just crouch on magma blocks but the situation where you forget to is not going to be a good time lol.

yeah someone already explained it nicely.
Honestly i only bother with underwater deep revines which are open and have exposed gold and maybe diamonds as well.
Air pockets be it doors or whatever is the next step
But if i were to go explore long underwater caverns i would most likely wait till i get a bunch of water breathing potions

I don't like giving too much info about the seeds i share. I feel like its better to let others explore and find out the chest contents, dungeon places and biomes. If someone is giving me a gift i would rather not know what it is until i open it for my self.

Yeah, that makes sense. I think it would be cool if there was some other item added. Not sure what, but it seems like underwater caves are just normal caves that are filled with water (for the most part). Would be cool if they where an unique exploration experience.
Y'all are probably playing Java. One thing of note if you play Bedrock is that doors underwater are waterlogged as of the latest update. They are no longer valid breathing spaces.
Correction, two chests are above and below in the stern (the rounded part in the back.) The supply chest is forward (in the bow, the pointy part) and the other two chests are in the stern. Of course any of them may be missing depending on how 'damaged' the shipwreck is.

Nice! I feel like a survival noob, you guys know exactly where the chests will be lol.

Very good reply ...

Just testing.
Dig 1 block into the ceiling to make an air pocket (water will not flow upwards), swim to it when you need air.

I do not see why people hate em.
That's true. Was easier when you didn't drown in approximately 1 second.

Submerged caves? or are you referring to somthin else.
Hi, you are a cool person!
3 chests.
2 of them are in the forward section, above and below (as if the captain had their own chest in their quarters.)
- Treasure chest (diamonds, emeralds, iron, gold ...)
- Supply chest (potatoes, gunpowder, TNT ... )
- Map chest (paper, books, treasure map)
Oh, cool!

Ha.
I spawned in a mesa and pledged to never set foot in a non-mesa land biome.
So I toured around in the ocean, must have plundered a dozen or two wrecks, mainly looking for books.
After a while I figured out a pattern and checked the wiki just to be sure.
