Diamond Ore can be found in veins of 1-8 blocks (sometimes even more if multiple veins happen to spawn together, and down to 1 if the block that was supposed to be diamond ore is occupied by dungeon, ravine, stronghold, lake, lava pool, other ores, patches of dirt and gravel etc.)
hehe. I use a Phoenix Branch Mine (Google it) design for all my mining... and I always mine at y=13. Diamonds can be frequently found this way... I often have ~30 diamonds within a few hours of starting the world. My highest diamond count in a vein was nine.
y=13 is the BEST depth for a branch mine. Why? Simple. It's deep enough for Diamond to be found, while also being a few blocks too high to encounter most lava pools. I've only found two lava pools in two worlds with completely dug-out Phoenix mines... So, almost no lava to deal with, but deep enough to find most diamonds, and plenty of other ores :biggrin.gif:
The most you can get in an individual vein is 8. But if more then one veins spawn together it could be much more. The most I've found in one vein is 6. Although one time I got 16 from an abandoned mineshaft. Both from chests and exposed ores. I was pretty damn happy.
