Have you ever sat in front of your exp grinder and wondered how much xp you will get when you kill all the mobs? If you use splash potions, not knowing can waste them, and if you use a crusher, pressing the button and coming up short of level 30 will waste even more time. Use this level guide to figure out exactly how many mobs you need to kill!
By pressing f3, you can find the amount of mobs on your screen. Below the "Minecraft X.X.X" there should be a C, ignore that and go down the the "E". That is the count of all entities in the loaded chunks around you.
E: entities on your screen/entities in your chunk radius. We want the number in front of the slash.
As you can see, there are 3 entities where I am looking and 98 in the chunks loaded around me. Note that this counts everything, including dropped items, boats, minecarts, and most importantly, mobs.
For best results, put your cursor directly on your mob collection area. The entity count will count all mobs on your screen, even if they are behind a wall you are looking at.
Format: Level number: xp needed to reach level - amount of "normal" mobs needed to reach that level.
Note: This guide assumes that you are at level 0 (i.e it takes 34 xp to get from level 0 to level 2, not 34 xp to get from level 1 to level 2).
All mobs that drop 5 xp count as normal mobs (Cave spider, spider, creeper, enderman, ghast, skeleton, silverfish, zombie, zombie pigman, witch).

Wow .. this is helpful! although I don't know if it's true that in the next update exp grinders would give less xp balls or something like that ... I don't know how that works ... I think it's when you kill the same mob always you get less xp balls as the usual .. I guess?

That was only in the first few 1.4 snapshots. After everybody started hating the nerf, Dinnerbone removed it.

By pressing f3, you can find the amount of mobs on your screen. Below the "Minecraft 1.3.2" there should be a C, ignore that and go down the the "E". That is the count of all entities in the loaded chunks around you.

Note that this counts everything, including dropped items, boats, minecarts, and most importantly, mobs. For best results, stare directly at your mob collection area. The entity count will count all mobs on your screen, even if they are in a cave below you.

Does it take for level 2 7 mobs from level 0 or 7 mobs from level 1 so for level 2 you need to kill total 7+4=11?
7 mobs from level 0. Basically this guide assumes you are at level 0 and shows you how many monsters you need to kill to get to whatever level.
Also, @OP, shouldn't you change "1.3.2" to "1.4.2" to be current?

The problem with this is I always have 5-10 entities whereever I look, so these numbers are always going to be a bit low.
Actually, these numbers should be pretty accurate if you grind for awhile.
See, mobs will despawn randomly if they are 32 blocks away from you, and mobs 128 blocks away will despawn instantly. If you sit in your grinder for awhile, most if not all mobs around you should despawn. I use Rei's minimap and after a few minutes of grinding, the mob radar has nothing on it except for all the mobs from my grinder.
