found a most epic ravine in a seed in 1.7, (it's ravines within ravines within ravines down to the lava layer, and there's a mineshaft) and so I've taken on myself a REALLY hard challenge. Basically, gear up, jump down to the diamond layer and survive, mine and escape with all your ores.
Setup: Start a new world. Seed 4562612450690974354. Bonus chest on.
Day 1: Gather resources while travelling to x=666, z=0. This is nearly a day's journey. You should see a ravine ahead to the left. Look down.
You may craft a bed and set spawn.
Day 2: The challenge begins. Can you survive to day 3?
1. Dig a water trench from the ocean at x=490 towards the ravine.
2. Ride your falls down. Take the opportunity to look around as you do. It's epic.
3. At the bottom dig more to get the water flowing to the bottom of the ravine. (Watch out for attackers, you must be quick.) Ride down. You should now be at z=20.
4. Run and hide! Find a cave to establish base. Secure it.
5. Place a bed. Set spawn as soon as you can. (However, if it's not night, or mobs are nearby, this can be a challenge.)
Day 3-200.
Survive. To escape, you MUST build a rail line to the surface, and run chest-carts to the surface with all the ores you find.
RULES:
You may not gather iron, gold, or diamond before you go down the Ravine.
Once in the ravine you may not leave until you have your rail line running from bottom to top.
You may not mine into walls, except to gather visible ores, or dig towards the signs of water, lava or mobs.
To win the challenge, you must exit through the top of the main ravine.
SUGGESTIONS:
Bring seeds to plant wheat.
Bring saplings to plant trees. Plant in an open ravine.
Your rail line must go up open ravines or caves. Scout and secure the area before you build.
Bring leather and sugar cane to make an enchantment table and bookshelf.
Secure a ravine floor against kamikaze mobs by fortifying the edges.
When you have lots of wood, build ladders for climbing, only don't climb out.
Explore the mineshaft (it's high up in the main ravine).
SCORE: This is hard! I've failed 3 times already. 4th time is going better. Anyone who succeeds wins.

I'm not totally happy with the victory condition. My purpose is to get people to take on the exposed ravines and beat them. A simpler and shorter challenge would be to simply escape with a diamond block. If anyone has suggestions to make please do.
This sounds like a fun challenge but I think allowing only one game day to travel that distance and also gather needed materials is cutting it a bit close.
Sounds interesting! I don't plan on playing 1.7 until the official release, so I hope the seed still works then. It seems like even with the mineshaft for free rails, you're going to have to find a lot of iron in order to build your rail line out. Not that I mind-it sounds like a fun long-term project not unlike the underwater base challenge: a limited time to gather above-ground resources before cutting yourself off from the surface.
By the way, another good suggestion would be to try to push some animals into your waterfall before you enter the ravine so you have a good food supply, and maybe a source of leather if you can get some cows.

Every time you post a question without first consulting the wiki, I die a little inside.
I like it! I don't mess with the snapshots so I guess I'll have to wait for 1.7 to try it with your seed but in the meantime I'm going to start a new world and go with the first ravine I find. To try to be as true to the original challenge as possible I'll limit resource gathering prior to finding a suitable ravine/ocean combo. I like lazyrunner's suggestion regarding shoving animals into the falls as well. Not only practical but also some of them will miss the falls and I love to hear them scream on the way down. (Sorry, did I type that out loud?) Seriously though I can visualize the entire floor of the ravine covered with cows and chickens.

You can also take part of the second day. It's in a savanna biome with lots of things available to gather.

Likely whatever ravine you find will be much easier. I travel a lot and have never seen a ravine remotely as challenging as this one. If you want to herd animals down go ahead.
Crikey, yes it is! You can see layer 19 there. Actually that deep spot is part of another ravine running crosswise to the main crevasse. This is default world gen.
This kind of reminds me of the old 404 challenge....oh, that was fun. And rage inducing.
If I was still into these kinds of challenges, I would so this one. Of course, I am just doing regular survival right now, with a little modded world on the side.
Also, are there any limitations to what may or may not be crafted/built/used down there other than what you have down? Such as only redstone torches, or no certain armour types (it would REALLY be difficult if iron grade was banned)

I'm glad people like it. I hope to hear trial runs. Raffi, there's no restrictions after you reach diamond layer on what you may craft. The hard part is starting out. With so many ravines you will have no problem finding ores but serious problem mining them safely. Plus you will need to establish a food supply and wood supply in addition to tools and armor. Once your gear is good, you can attempt to light the ravines up and then mine and build your path to escape.
Anybody is welcome to play with additional restrictions and claim credit, but at this point the board is still open to the first victor.
I'm in! Made it safely to the bottom of the ravine on the second attempt. I've found a cave and am ready to start the adventure. I got lucky on the way to the ravine .. I got off course a bit and discovered a village. Picked up some carrots and potatoes and some books. Hope that was ok!

For those of you wondering, you can't do this challenge in Amplified terrain. The ravine is still there, but it's covered entirely by ground above it. And the amplified terrain really kills the size of the ravine.
I also tried to locate the ravine in Large Biomes mode. I did find a ravine near the expected location (2600X, -100Z) but it was not nearly as impressive. I may not have found the right one, or the ravine may just not be there in Large Biomes.
I have a couple of suggested additions to your challenge:
Expert challenges:
1. Make a bed only using wood found in mineshafts and string taken from Spiders.
2. Make your rails ONLY from mined iron. If your raillines connect to rail lines already placed in mineshafts, that's acceptable.
3. Make your way back to the surface ONLY via natural caves/mineshafts. NOT up the ravine walls.
4. Cut down only one tree enroute to the ravine. Take only one sapling and one dirt with you to the ravine.
5. UHC mode anyone?
6. Rotten flesh diet.
Feel free to add to these
Also if #3 seems too hard, let yourself dig 5 blocks in any direction within the naturally spawned caves/mineshafts to try to find caves adjacent to but not physically connected to the one you're in.
I plan to try the challenge following #2, 3 and 4. If I don't find any sheep enroute to the ravine, I'll have no choice but to follow #1. #5 just seems too challenging for a n00b like me. #6 would be okay, but I plan on building a wheat farm.

Absolutely take anything that's not made of gold, iron, or diamond. I never found a village but I did find a temple. The bones are useful but iron and gold were off limits. TNT I'll find a fun thing to do with that but it's not that useful.

1 is almost as bad as hardcore mode as getting to the shaft without dying and without ladders will be very hard.
3 I'm not sure but in my opinion that is safer than going up the ravine. It depends on what your caves are like. Caves are allowed in general though, just not mining blindly through stone or dirt.
5 hah!
6 that would be torture. That's why I suggest the wheat farm.
P.S. both sheep and trees grow by the ravine, so that's not a problem.

Here's my retorts:
1. I never said you couldn't harvest wood or wool from outside the ravine. Just that you couldn't use that to craft your bed....
3. I think it adds challenge especially if the eventual surface exit is very far away. I added the digging exception just in case none of the caves led to the surface (which has happened to me before).
I'm working the challenge according to my Trapper rules. It's fun! I'm wandering through ravines and caves and pulling the ores and just making fun. It may be a long time before I finish. Anyway the Diamond Block challenge is still open.
Well I died, lost my best stuff. Still, have not found a single diamond. Is this like the most unlucky swiss cheese world ever? I'm going on and on at level 12 and no diamonds!

I'm finding tons of everything except diamond .. not a single one so far.
This part runs down a side canyon
looking down from the top edge of the main ravine where the rail line ends
looking in the opposite direction from the same spot as the image above
