I've been playing my current survival world since November of last year, and I was just contemplating starting a new world now that 1.7 is out, because there are so many new terrain gen features, and I have explored the surrounding 3000 blocks in all directions of my base.
However, the main reason that I don't want to start a new world is that I have built so many amazing and huge things in my current one, and created so many cool contraptions and buildings that I don't want to go without my base, that is almost a year in the making.
The fact that I've built so many cool things also brings me to another reason why I should start a new world. All that is really left to do in my current one is build, and go mining every once in a while. I have farms for any resource I need, an enderman farm for XP, plenty of fortune 3 picks from that XP, and in turn, plenty of diamonds and any other mineable resource. Therefore, I have trouble creating things nowadays that will actually have significant use. Because there is no reason to do anything like farm (As everything is as automated as possible), or mine often, or any other survival-esque activities, sometimes I just get bored from just building (although rarely).
Because I am so used to my base, it would be hard to create a survival world and actually get into it, because my new one might lack the "charm" of sorts of my old one that has been great enough to play with for an entire year.
TL:DR: I have put countless hours of work into my old world but I have everything I could need in it, but I feel like I should start anew with the update that comes with a lot of new terrain gen.
Should I keep on playing in a world that has been growing for a while, but doesn't really have many aspects of survival anymore, or should I start a fresh world to explore the new biomes and create a new type of home?
I'd just like to hear what you guys think.

My chest chamber, to show why I don't need to go resource hunting very often:
New chunks should generate if you walk out further, so you can still get new biomes. I would recommend travelling out with a nether portal, to avoid the giant cliffs that occur with terrain generation changes
You can use MCEdit to move your stuff to a new world (export a selection, then import it into the new world); this is what I did when I wanted a new world in 1.6.2, although that was easier because the world was actually the same except I modified the underground generation; for a completely new world, you'd want to find or flatten an area for your things (harder if you made something into a mountain, be careful that you also select underground parts as well, MCEdit makes this easy with an x-ray view underground). I've already found a good seed for my world in 1.7.2 (just waiting for MCP, Forge and mods to update); there is a small hill where I'll put my base but MCEdit will overwrite it anyway, any other mismatches can be fixed in-game.
You can also try deleting/pruning chunks around your base and see if you get good results (make a backup before doing this; MCEdit doesn't allow you to undo chunk deletes), or select an area around your stuff, instead of just the structures (you can also shift a selection up/down to remove chunk borders).
You can keep your current world and 1.7.2 chunks will be generated in any unexplored areas. There may a mismatch between old and new chunks where the chunks are at different elevations.
You can also use MCEdit to delete existing chunks (without buildings) and the old terrain will be replaced with new terrain.
I suggest getting a horse or making a mine cart trail. Or you can use the nether portal idea. Starting a new one should be a good idea, with all the new achievements.
Yes I have used nether portals and horses to travel out far, I wouldn't make a new world because of the challenge of getting new chunks to load, just to start fresh. Also my base has so much content that it lags a fair amount.
I'd say make a new one, enough has changed since then so it will be new. Additionally it sounds like your world has been conquered anyway so a clean start might feel good.
Besides if you want to go back to your old world it's just as easy to load that back up.
I've gone through this once. I had a world called "I don't care" because that was the seed name. It spawned you in a jungle with a mushroom biome in plain sight. At that time jungles had just been added. I can't remember how long I had it. I never got very much accomplished, unlike you. Mostly because I was a noob almost the whole time I had that world. I had no farms for things like slimeballs or iron ingots. I go very fed up with the world because I couldn't do anything.
Then one day I decided to make a new world. It was "the remake" because I was remaking my plans for my old world. That was back in December. I found a seed that was ice plains with lots of mountains. There its extremely cold. It's kind of a joke because my username is Flame_Hazard. That way my flames could be contained. I have just gotten things where I want them in my world a few weeks ago. To where all I need to do is get food from the cows every once and a while and go mining. The rest of the time is spent working on projects. My latest one is the "gold pan". A gold farm built above the bedrock ceiling in the nether. After that I hope I can finish my house. An ice mountain made of snow then covered in ice. It will contain my core of flames, my storage room at the center. However this will take awhile because the snow required to build this. Note: this is like the ice kings palace from adventure time. That's how big it is. I'm hopping to finish the mountains before the anniversary of the remake. I don't remember when I started it, but I will set the date for New Year's Eve.
I suggest you start anew. It sounds like you have had a great journey in that world of yours. You should try something new with the knowledge you gained from that world. My last bit of advise for you is to make a book and quill in your new world once you have the materials. Then write down everything you want to do in your new world. After that refer back to the book once you finish a project. Then start on the next thing on the list. If you keep adding to it you will never run out of things to do in your world!
You have a magnum decision to make. I hope you chose well!
I agree with some of the others. create a new world but also keep the old one, I tried using 1.7 on my old world, I went to explore but I didn't like how many savannas I came across... >.< So I will keep my main world on 1.6.4 for exploring and 1.7 for normal stuff probably.
I have made a new world for 1.7, but I will keep my old one. Good luck!

I completely agree. Create a new one and keep the old.
When the world gen changed for beta 1.8 I made a new world, and still regret deleting the old one. I had been using that same world for the entirety of beta, ever since I started playing.
Even though I have all the structures from it save to schematics I still miss that world.

I did a quick google, but is there an easy way to do this? I have MCEdit, and just used it once to fix a corrupted chunk. Is the process the same? Much thanks.

Yep, you can just use the chunk tool to select them and select delete. But make sure to keep a backup when doing this because there isn't a undo.

I highly recommend starting a new one. Just spawning into a world, and seeing an empty canvas waiting for you, is a great feeling. The initial rush of not having ANYTHING, and knowing that there's no fallback position, no stash of supplies waiting back home, is a lot of fun. You may never regain the feeling of starting Minecraft again, but starting a new survival world comes close IMO.
Of course I may be biased. I start a new world about every couple of months, and these days I play with natural regeneration turned off, just for the extra challenge. It doesn't take long for a world to feel "conquered" to me.
However, the main reason that I don't want to start a new world is that I have built so many amazing and huge things in my current one, and created so many cool contraptions and buildings that I don't want to go without my base, that is almost a year in the making.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
