Hold bucket of water in hand, face straight down, hold right-click.
that might be a practical thing... In fact i take my bucket of water almost everywhere since its handy for me... i use to try to avoid fall damage/death, i also use it to get some mobs away (put a source on the floor, stay in the middle and look at them struggle with the water until you can think a better way to figh or scape) and also for climbing cliffs. If you think about it its incredible the things you can do with such a simple thing...
I don't think I have ever carried a water bucket with me, but reading Ttzara's post I might now! xD
Thanks Lisha! To climb cliffs (even walls) just start placing a water block on top of you, then climb 1 block bellow the water source level. Remove it and the water will slowly go down so theres a bit of time to place t he water source some levels above... repeat untill you reach the top. If you need to rest you can place a block on the side to stand and then keep going up.
For the mobs, its a good ender-repellent hehe and keeps zombies away too (i suspect that might not completely work with spiders) but i dont recommend this if theres skeletons around (unless you have a bow, of course).
with two buckets you can make a small pond to fish on trips (even on caves i suspect, where you can take 1 bucket and find 2 water sources to make infinite source)
I've recently found myself always with a bucket for the underwater breathing technique, too. Blew my mind when I found that out.
Water bucket = standard equipment now.
Buckets of water. Always water. Sometimes I carry 2 buckets of water that's how much I like it. Can setup a pool anywhere. Kill lava. Push mobs away. Fall down cliffs. Fish. !!!!
Wear boots with Feather Falling IV on them - if you can remember to put them on, that is (I only wear a chestplate and leggings unless I need them to save on armor repairs; put Protection IV on them and you get close to full diamond armor from the two most durable and repair-efficient parts. Also, Protection reduces fall damage to a lesser extent).
Of course, I always carry a bucket of water when caving, using it liberally especially when lava is in sight; better to fall down a ravine and die hitting obsidian than in lava (lava also doesn't break your fall like water does unless it is deep enough, and then you'd probably die before surfacing without Fire Resistance/Protection).
But you can't take water into the nether, so if you fall you're most likely screwed. (Lava is annoying)
I actually use lava buckets in the nether much like I use water buckets in the overworld. All it takes is a potion of fire resistance. The fire animation can make it hard to see though.

Every time you post a question without first consulting the wiki, I die a little inside.

Yeah, enchanted boots does the trick too but its more likely to get a bucket of water in day 1 and keep it with you for long time, wile the enchanted boots are something that you will get further in game
Cool trick. I wear feather falling 4 boots with protection 4 and unbreaking 3 everywhere I go. Plus a diamond chest with protection 4 and unbreaking 3. So I dnt worry about fall damage much. With a full set of protection and feather falling 4 you can survive a 92 block fall! That's awesome, but I use ender pearls to soften up my landing.

But theres a difference.... you could use 3 iron and a block of water to get a bucket of water and save all the enchanting, grinding and whatnot... of course, using the water to avoid fall damage might require some skill too...
Crap, now Jeb is going to patch this.

Sometimes it is hard to get to your water bucket.
Baseball, then Minecraft.

People never really think of water buckets as a standard tool, but it useful for sooooooo many things.
Lava can be your best ally too, there are other uses for lava buckets but its obviously more risky...

Definitely. With the new zombie hordes I've started experimenting with carrying a lava bucket to fry any zombies that get in my way.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
