Technically speaking? "Do not distribute anything we've made. This includes, but not limited to, the client or the server software for the game. This also includes modified versions of anything we've made." But if you actually asked Notch or Jeb, they'd probably say "Never dig straight down".
My personal rule is this: Never expect anything you build to be forever. It could vanish tomorrow, so treasure the memories, not the blocks.

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
To make digging up and down safe, when you dig up, place a torch under you for gravel / sand, and if it's lava you should have the time to block it off, in the rare chance you dig UP into lava. When digging down, stand in the middle of 2 blocks and dig 1 down then the other. If you dig down on 1 and there is a gap, you should not fall through.
1) Always dig straight down
2) Always sleep in the nether
3) When fighting the Enderdragon, look at as many Enderman as you can. They'll help you fight the dragon.
My number one rule would probably be pour water on all lava in sight; the last time I died in lava was months ago and only because I fell through a mostly hidden 1x1 block hole in the ground into a pool too big and deep to swim up out of/place water (a related tip; before mining those diamonds right next to lava, even if covered up, pour water on/next to them and they won't burn up if there is lava under them).
There are a few essentials when carrying things. I always carry one of each tool (except hoes), at least 12 stakes/porkchops, several log blocks, several pieces of coal, at least one stack of torches, backups to every tool, blocks like cobble or dirt that will be replaced easily if used. Never carry around valuable ores/ingots unless you are about to drop them off. Always be prepared for any situation. I usually dont carry buckets untill i know i have a ton of iron to waste, so not early in the game.

My avatar-Madison Gotha. She knows various weapons, she's a mage/sage, and is somewhat immortal. Madison has the capability of taming and communicating monsters, a genetic trait passed down by her father. 26 physically, 1400-something mentally, and a Lofty Peakian/Zenithian mix. Doesn't really like being called an elf and hates being called human..

2. Run with lava buckets in your hotbar, it's fun
3. If you see a ghast, throw yourself into the nearest lava pool.
4. There are 3 minecraft sports: Enderman staring contest, wolf and zombie pigman punching, and cactus hugging
5. Aqua Affinity makes it so you can breathe underwater, so have fun being Aquaman.
THIS should get interesting results

I hope my advice helps.
Support this if you're interested in reducing lag whilst simultaneously expanding the game.
No digging straight up ESPECIALLY when at layers 5/6
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
