HERE'S ANOTHER ONE (taken while exploring aboveground, randomly decided to look under me because I heard noises, and saw this): http://imgur.com/2MZjm
I don't know why, but there are way way way too many caves. I don't recall there being this many before 1.8. I like exploring caves, and it's cool to navigate the enormous mineshafts. But only to a certain point. After spending hours and hours in a seemingly endless cave system, it just gets boring and repetitive. Now you might say "If you're bored with the cave, just leave". But the thing is, if I see a new area of a cave that I haven't explored yet, I can't rest until I've gone in and lit the whole thing up, and taken all the ores out of it. It's kind of like OCD, I just can't let it go.
The cave system that I've been in since I started this world 3 days ago is just way too big. I dug a staircase mine type thing for a bit, just to collect a few ores to get me started. Within about 5-10 minutes I found my self in a cave system. 3 days later, I'm still in the cave system. I've seen about 3 ravines, destroyed 2 cave spider spawners, gotten lost in 2 different abandoned mineshafts and maybe 20 different caverns. I have half a chest full of coal, and the other half is iron, gold and a few diamonds.
IT NEVER ENDS. I once dug into a coal vein, and there happened to be yet another cave system on the other side of it, which is just as vast as the one I'm in already. It's getting ridiculous.
How does it make the game too easy? Well, I can just walk around or dig for 10 minutes, find a cave system, and walk out 10 minutes later with a stack of iron and 3 stacks of coal. There's no point in mining anymore, and in fact, mining would just be disrupted because you would hit caves every few minutes. Caves and ravines aren't special anymore, they're just annoying now. I look in my chest of coal and iron, and it just feels wrong. I'm not proud of having so much resources, because it doesn't feel like I actually worked for them. All I did was accidentally find a cave, and now I have more resources than I'll ever need.
So what can I do with all this iron? Making minecart tracks is useless... All I have to do is go down into the cave system and break the tracks in the mineshaft. So that's not an option.
One cave leads to a mineshaft. The mineshaft leads to a ravine and a few other caves, the ravine leads to even more caves and another mineshaft which leads to more caves and another ravine, and all these caves lead to more caves, and more ravines, and more mineshafts which lead to more and more.
I would be exaggerating if I said it was gamebreaking, because the game is definitely still playable. But this is still a fundamental problem with the game. A game should NOT be in a state where a player can get a full set of armor, tools and weapons of the second-highest tier within 20 minutes. That isn't good balance. I'm not exaggerating about 20 minutes, either.
Every time I climb down my staircase and go into the vast cave system, I will walk out with at least 3 stacks of coal and at least 1.5 stacks of iron. And it doesn't even take that long. It takes longer once you've explored most of the area around your point of entrance. But when you first enter a cave, you can leave with ridiculous amounts of high-level resources in 20 minutes tops.
I agree that there is an abundance of caves now, it seems really excessive, although it is nice for awhile. I do enjoy caving, but I agree that this is excessive.
Ya i can understand why that is really annoying. except sometimes I like having huge cave systems. It's fun to explore them.
Yeah, I agree. It's quite fun for awhile. But then it just gets to the point where I'm thinking to myself "Uggghhhh when is this damn thing going to end?".
I had a cave system alot like that under a little town on my server. It lagged so bad and i always got lost. I know what you mean though there are too many caves.
There's no point in mining anymore, and in fact, mining would just be disrupted because you would hit caves every few minutes.
If by "mining" you mean "digging endlessly through layers and layers of rock, hoping that you will randomly stumble upon some ores or something" then yeah, you might have a point. But you're still actually "mining" when you go into caves, it's just that you're only "mining" the ores you find instead of "mining" a bunch of stone and hoping there's something good mixed in.
So what can I do with all this iron? Making minecart tracks is useless... All I have to do is go down into the cave system and break the tracks in the mineshaft. So that's not an option.
How many tracks did you find? I know I cleared out the abandoned shaft I found underneath my base and only got maybe a couple hundred rails. I need ten times that much for my current project (I wanted to build an iron farm, but the Village near my home is a ghost town. The nearest other one I found was some 2,000 blocks away. So I built an iron farm there, in order to get enough rails, to cart some townies back over to my neck of the woods, just so that I can build an iron farm there. Probably more trouble than it's worth but hey, that's just how I roll :))
I HATE running into caves while mining. I made a staircase mine, like you, and I fund a cave, get tempted to explore it, I do, and always end up in lava, or a crater... I wish they would make caves ALOT rarer, but ALOT huger, and awesomer...
I was using noclip and found 4 dungeons and diamond ore! I guess part of the problem is the ravines. They should be rare ,and caves should be rare too but not too rare. The biggest problem is that they are coded so that they connect with other caves to make bigger ones.
Agreed, cave generation is rediculous now and definitly needs reduced a bit.
I think if they moved sea level to 96 instead of 64 and didn't increase the amount of caves generating it would help a bit.
Increasing the sea level would mean MORE room for caves. :I
But, I would love to have that, exploring with friends and becoming rich is what we both like.
More area for the caves to spawn but no more caves then normal, it should space them out a bit better.
I think it would be cool if caves only appeared in mountain biomes and on the coast.
There are too many atm for sure. The world beneath your feet is like Swiss cheese.
Swiss cheese? More like foam. I was just playing MC and I got lost in one of those caves. So I dug a staircase upwards to get up. I encountered 2 more huge cave systems just on the way up.
I love giant cave systems. I think you can never have too much ore. And if you hate them so much, why don't you just not explore them? You could build something huge with all the resources you have instead, and just go mining when you need more.
I have had the same problem. The surface caves can be hard to find, but once you get down into the bowels of the earth, it seems like the caves go on forever. But what really bothers me is how hard it is to find diamonds. Coal, Iron and even gold are incredibly easy to find, but diamonds are almost nonexistant. Since a diamond pickaxe is required to mine obsidian, I have yet to aquire a significant amount of it.
I think surface caves are very abundant. Maybe it's just your world. Also, yes diamonds are rare, but I think looking for them can be fun! You also get LOADS of redstone, iron, and other useful things.
1. You do NOT have OCD and I wish i could have people like you arrested for falsely claiming a mental illness.
2. You are obviously playing on peaceful if it's that easy to find all that ****.
3. If you are playing on peaceful to find all that ****, you have no place to complain about the game being too difficult. Set the game to hard or hardcore mode and caves will be a very different place.

I don't have OCD. I never said I did. I said "kind of like OCD", because I "need" to clear out a cave, I can't just pass a cave that I haven't cleared out and forget about it. Just for the record, I have Asperger's Syndrome (Not saying that's the cause of this, but it might influence it a bit). Anyways,
And I don't think I can be arrested for claiming a mental illness on a minecraft forum, even if I did do so. Also, I don't play on peaceful. Playing on peaceful doesn't even change the terrain generator, so I would find the same stuff on peaceful as I would on any other difficulty level. I play on normal.
WARNING: Long post. I'll format it better with images and such soon.

What version was your world created on? This only seems to be happening in recent versions (1.8 Beta and up)

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

I'm finally back. See profile for details.
As you may have noticed on the front page, Notch originally nick-named it "Cave Game".
That'll take you a while.
