HERE'S ANOTHER ONE (taken while exploring aboveground, randomly decided to look under me because I heard noises, and saw this): http://imgur.com/2MZjm
I don't know why, but there are way way way too many caves. I don't recall there being this many before 1.8. I like exploring caves, and it's cool to navigate the enormous mineshafts. But only to a certain point. After spending hours and hours in a seemingly endless cave system, it just gets boring and repetitive. Now you might say "If you're bored with the cave, just leave". But the thing is, if I see a new area of a cave that I haven't explored yet, I can't rest until I've gone in and lit the whole thing up, and taken all the ores out of it. It's kind of like OCD, I just can't let it go.
The cave system that I've been in since I started this world 3 days ago is just way too big. I dug a staircase mine type thing for a bit, just to collect a few ores to get me started. Within about 5-10 minutes I found my self in a cave system. 3 days later, I'm still in the cave system. I've seen about 3 ravines, destroyed 2 cave spider spawners, gotten lost in 2 different abandoned mineshafts and maybe 20 different caverns. I have half a chest full of coal, and the other half is iron, gold and a few diamonds.
IT NEVER ENDS. I once dug into a coal vein, and there happened to be yet another cave system on the other side of it, which is just as vast as the one I'm in already. It's getting ridiculous.
How does it make the game too easy? Well, I can just walk around or dig for 10 minutes, find a cave system, and walk out 10 minutes later with a stack of iron and 3 stacks of coal. There's no point in mining anymore, and in fact, mining would just be disrupted because you would hit caves every few minutes. Caves and ravines aren't special anymore, they're just annoying now. I look in my chest of coal and iron, and it just feels wrong. I'm not proud of having so much resources, because it doesn't feel like I actually worked for them. All I did was accidentally find a cave, and now I have more resources than I'll ever need.
So what can I do with all this iron? Making minecart tracks is useless... All I have to do is go down into the cave system and break the tracks in the mineshaft. So that's not an option.
One cave leads to a mineshaft. The mineshaft leads to a ravine and a few other caves, the ravine leads to even more caves and another mineshaft which leads to more caves and another ravine, and all these caves lead to more caves, and more ravines, and more mineshafts which lead to more and more.
I would be exaggerating if I said it was gamebreaking, because the game is definitely still playable. But this is still a fundamental problem with the game. A game should NOT be in a state where a player can get a full set of armor, tools and weapons of the second-highest tier within 20 minutes. That isn't good balance. I'm not exaggerating about 20 minutes, either.
Every time I climb down my staircase and go into the vast cave system, I will walk out with at least 3 stacks of coal and at least 1.5 stacks of iron. And it doesn't even take that long. It takes longer once you've explored most of the area around your point of entrance. But when you first enter a cave, you can leave with ridiculous amounts of high-level resources in 20 minutes tops.
Agreed 19 stacks of iron 7 stacks of coal (i eventually just quit mining it :P) 35 diamonds and 56 stacks of redstone. REALLY? Caves need to be a lot more rare!

I agree. I started a new world the other day. Once I finished my house and had a steady food supply, I decided to make a basement. I only got half the room done when I ran into the cave. I started exploring it, which lead to more caves. I'm still exploring it and I have a chest full of Iron. This has to get fixed.
I disagree. Why? because of the difference between caving and, to make an example, branch mining. For me, there is nothing more to branch mining than: break one block, break another block, move forward, rinse and repeat ad nauseam. Caving, on the other hand, is less predictable. I never really know what will be around the corner and that give a sense of adventure. When I do make tunnels, it is for the express purpose of finding new caves.
EDIT: sorry about the necropost, I didn't see the date. However, this may still be a relevant conversation.
Maybe it's just me, but I see nothing wrong with the large amount of caves that there are in the Minecraft world. I mean, the world is meant for us to explore, and MINE. I mean, it's the purpose of the game guys. I think mining may get boring after a while, so I stop. I build around on my world, try out some new things, and when I'm in the mood, I go mining again. It's not like you need to mine all day, which some people do. There are other things to do, use your resources, make something awesome that uses 56 stacks of redstone, like someone was complaining about, use 20 stacks of iron, building is something fun. Then go back to mining when you need more resourses.
I agree with this, caves should be rarer and mineshafts and ravines should be aswell. Alot of people disagree though, so the best change would be something like a slider when creating worlds that increases and decreases the amount of them.
Agreed. I actually hate caving, I much prefer nice, tidy branch mines (OCD coming out I suppose). But I like to play hardcore and the sheer amount of caves/ravines can be aggravating at times.
Mojang apparently listed to the complaints about too many caves, as you can find out in this thread.
Meanwhile, I can't get enough of them and modded my game to make some of the craziest Swiss cheese that you can imagine (I can explore an average vanilla cave system in a day of playing, which is to say, a few hours, even the largest ones took only a few days, even before I used mods like backpacks and Rei's Minimap, with its cave mapping):
This was a test world but the world I'm playing right now has the same generation; the giant cave system at the top is what I call a "supercolossal" cave and is about 500 blocks across and contains over 1,300 individual caves (maximum size, they can be from half as big to what you see here), along with several "supermassive" cave systems and even the common small cave systems average 25% more dense than 1.6.x and earlier caves, if a bit further apart to make exploring individual cave systems easier, I also made it so most caves and ravines only cut though stone, so the landscape looks much better than vanilla. Also, look to the SW of the supercolossal cave, that's a "ravine", if a rare and extreme case.
Also, I made a suggestion that caves should be customizable via settings provided when a world is created, although it looks like they won't do that (long overdue for superflat customization to be applied to default), then people can stop complaining that there are too many (or too few, but I can just mod 1.7 when it is released, I actually used JBE to mod the snapshots, if just to restore the old generation).
You guys want caves to be more rare.... Basically you want to force people to branch mine. Minecraft as it is now is autistic enough the last thing it needs is to force people to friggin branch mine. That doesn't make the game harder it makes it more autistic.

I agree with this entirely. I hate all of the caves underground. I cannot go more than five minutes without hearing a bat behind a wall >:(
When the world does not load the chunks properly, and I can see underground, my world looks like a giant piece of foam. All the ravines and mineshafts are so annoying now. I am trying to build pens for my animals, and there is literally nowhere around my house, devoid of hideous caves jutting to the surface. One even had a dungeon, and I do not even bother to explore those near my home.
I do not like caving in minecraft because of how scary and dangerous it is underground. I will go underground on peaceful, but caves for me are mostly just a menace when I am building underground rooms for my house. I would just fill them all in with a bunch of water, but I am branch mining. If only there was cement in minecraft, that would make life so much easier...
And all the monster noises do not ease my nerves when I am tending my underground sugarcane farm.
There will always be that kind of a moment at least once in everyone's life. That moment when your sitting there listening to someone going down memory lane, but really not listening at all.
Sometimes when you mine casually sometimes you might drop unluckily into lava. Anyways caves are good for one reason, lots of ores. There are a lot more caves than you know it generated in your world.
Yeah, but you should not be able to collect 5 stacks of iron when you wander into a cave.
The seed -123775873255737467 in 1.6.4 or earlier is the best cave seed I've ever seen; here is what the surface and underground looks like (and this just shows caves I explored; for scale the world is about 4,000 blocks long; I also mined about 100,000 iron ore alone from these caves):
This includes the biggest and most epic cave system I've ever seen as well, centered at -800, -1050; the ground is more air than actual ground here with a Nether-like lava sea at the bottom:
And yes, as you can tell, I most definitely do NOT think there are too many caves; if anything, the changes to caves in 1.7, making cave systems much smaller and less concentrated, are what I consider to be gamebreaking. 1.8 looks like it will be even worse; not so much because cave generation was changed but because the "customized" world type only allows you to have all or none, nothing in between, when it is very easy to change cave density/size/frequency.

You want to make the game HARDER??????????!!!!!!!!!!
It won't make things harder it will just make it so people don't have 3 stacks of diamonds in the first week.

Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
but don't make all of the cave connect to one big ass cave, I want to sometime actually finish a cave...
