You might want to check out my cannon, as far as I am aware it has the longest range in minecraft at present with shots going over 25km on a flat world.
Oh my goodness, that is incredible, im kinda speechless. Just a couple of questions. What function does the enchantment table serve, does it stop the charge TNT coming out the front of the barrel, but allow the blast through? What is the shot TNT sitting on? It looked like the 751 blocks replaced included some pistons as well, they did not appear to have a redstone retract function. Did the pistons act as the walls of the barrel as well as pushing the TNT into place?
Im glad I stopped trying to work on long range cannons and work on rapid-fire ones instead!
Just give a yell if you ever need some manpower ~ though with my internet speed that might not be possible...
Fair enough, this will be my last round of examination. Does the brewing stand allow the blast through it (unlike normal solid blocks)? My concern with the pistons was more that they were being included in the 751 blocks of tnt replaced, but upon second viewing I see not.
The brewing stand as far as I am aware doesnt allow the blast through it in any different way to any other block and no you are right, the pistons arent included in the 751 blocks replaced, but they are "pasted" back into positionafter each shot is fired. Hope that answers all your questions.....if you have more or just want to support my thread a little please post a few words there.

Good job necroing a post from the end of August.

Cool. However, when adding a new cannon to the thread, I think the technical name (below) could really help people to understand a cannon, even without pictures.
I've been experimenting with a cannon, and I carried out range tests today. the quick and dirty basic cannon will out range it, despite my desgin having twice the propellant.
Equally all the designs availible online are huge multi-shot jobs, which aren't applicable to my needs.
As a Final issue, my desgin will on occasion missfire, blowing the turret up.
What I'm going to be using it for:
Well I'm building a battleship. A scale, fully working battle ship. So I need a single shot breech loading cannon. Which I can stick two of into a turret on the ship.
@laukejas
That's a really cool idea, however, the timing would need to be perfect. A tiny error in the first booster will make each successive booster less accurate, until you blow a hole in your cannon without saving the world. That being said, it sounds like an interesting challenge. I'll see if I can do something about it.

LWR's are for plutonium, not power. CANDU's are the nuclear master race.
Oh, you can make some really compact and powerful cannons that use tnt minecarts. Basically, you drop allthe tnt minecarts onto the same section of powered rail. Then, you ignite the payload tnt. About half a second later, you can power the rail, which will explode, sending the tnt a few hundred blocks.
Pros:
-Super compact
-Very powerful
Cons:
-Single use (the rail needs to be replace, along with any redstone nearby...generally you make this in an obsidian chamber and have all the circutry elsewhwere.

Build a tube out of TNT dispensers all facing in. If it's say 9 blocks long you get 36 TNT at once. With a 2x2 barrel, you could have 144 TNT. How many do you need to go the distance?
Also, anyone experimented with snow? You can have custom heights for the shot.
I have an idea for TNT cannon. Most cannons are built high, attempting to put as much charge TNT's in close space as possible. That is something of a limitation - such high cannons are difficult to put anywhere, because they're just high.
I'm trying to make a cannon that is instead long - like a barrel of a gun, instead of being high. Since charge TNT is lesser effective the farther it is from shot TNT, and condensator cannons have their own limitations, how about implementing a mass accelerator, or railgun type of TNT cannon?
The idea is that shot TNT is fired from moderately strong cannon, and then accelerated more as it flies by other well-timed TNT's along the barrel. With this type of cannon, if it is timed very well, it should be possible to achieve very long distance shot with acceptable charge/shot ratio.
I'm trying to find a way to do this, but there are some problems. If I make this barrel 1 block wide and high, after shot, TNT slows down immediately when it touches the bottom of the barrel due to friction.
If I make barrel higher, shot TNT hits the ceiling and drops down to the ground.
I tried putting ice blocks on the bottom of the barrel, but they seem to have no effect on friction.
I also tried rails and minecart with TNT - but I found no way to accelerate it past 8m/s.
Can anyone give any advice? How to make such a TNT cannon that works in the way I described, like a mass accelerator? Are there any similar cannons already?
Never tried anything like this, but could you use ice blocks on the floor to prevent the friction? somehow with water or something to prevent the damage of the ice?

I would like to submit a design that I came up with ages ago for a warship that never got finished, called the Baconator 9000 (not the MCSS New York, as shown in the video.) The cannons are officially called the Baconator 9000-class Semi-automatic Autoloading Long Range Cannon, but are more commonly known as the B9K Class Autocannon. These cannons are actually a derivative of the cannons found on the Super Pirate Battle Royale map by FVDisco and Sethbling, but with several major differences. I personally like the cannon because it allows for a lot of firepower in a semi-automatic form with minimal redstone use. However, it is best used as a mounted gun, as opposed to one set up on a battlefield, due to its very long re-load time after all 10 shots have been fired, as well as its enormous size.
I actually fly over to the ship at 16:00, and fire the cannon at about 38:00.
laukejas: Well, the shot can't be in the tube or it wouldn't fly. It's the charge that would be in the tube, but maybe the top dispensers get in the way of the blast? About the snow, it shouldn't melt if you put the water source back far enough that it stops at the snow.
Also, if you haven't seen this yet, you must:
Observe the guide rails they use to keep the anvil flying straight.
I have just recently developed and devised a 7-9 speed auto piston mounted transmission that is uber-fast and efficient. Final tests and pictures I will post later tonight.
POLL Question:
How many of you cannoneers have made a 1.6.2 cannon with diode pulsar transmission?
My prototype fired over 250.4 shots per minute, and my 2nd prototype fired 120.3 shots per minute at a max distance of 250-500 blocks of land and air range.
I fired my cannon this morning, and the cannon malfunctioned, not firing the shot. Normally, this would be reversible, as only the front, and simple redstone would be damaged. Surprisingly though, despite having protected the charge with water, it started a chain of events that destroyed my cannon. The cannon has been tested before, and usually works, and I have invested lots of time in it as it was my favorite, the cannon I used for research. I just wanted to warn you about the event, and what could have caused it.

First off, people are unlikely to download a file when the person who posted it isn't known to be trusted.
Second, provide some pictures and I'm sure we can help you. It's probably an issue with timing or your mounting block.
