Well, in that case I apologize, the last time I played was with version 1.9.x and to be honest, I don't see a peaceful option in the front end singleplayer menu, the only three options when I click the top button are survival, hardcore and creative. The word peaceful isn't mentioned anywhere, also apart from the three options I mentioned there is no separate difficulty setting anywhere to be seen?
If you click on the "Opened lock" icon, the difficulty will be locked.

Okay, well, I hope locking it will do the trick then, but should hunger not work depending on the difficulty setting, regardless if the setting is locked or not?

yes it should. Creative survival hardcore is seperate from the difficulty settings of minecraft. They are modes. Put difficulty on anything past easy. You dont need to lock it
How much are you moving around? In 1.11 they severely nerfed most hunger effects such that walking will not deplete hunger at all, and everything else, except for regenerating health, was greatly reduced:
Even if you do e.g. jump you have to jump 80 times to deplete one hunger point, and that won't be visible until you deplete saturation (up to 20 points), meaning that you can jump up to 1600 times before any visible change occurs (the hunger bar starts shaking). Likewise, you can mine 800 blocks per hunger point - 16000 blocks on full saturation - enough to get all the diamonds you'll probably ever use in a typical world (Mending or otherwise) without ever eating.
You should definitely see an effect if you take damage though, which costs 1.5 hunger points per point of health regenerated (saturation alone can still regenerate 13 health; conversely, since you regenerate health twice per second it only takes 6.5 seconds to visibly deplete hunger).

Hm, so it's supposed to work like this? When I take damage the hunger bar indeed lowers quite quickly to replenish some health.
Before I upgraded to 1.13.1 the last I played was version 1.9.x, so since then the speed hunger depletes has changed to what TheMasterCaver showed in that link?
It's weird, I remember that getting food was a real thing in the old days, one of the interesting things in a survival game play through.
Oh well, all my farming ideas have become a lot less interesting then.
The title states it all, in a new created normal survival world with 1.13.1
While setting up farms and things I just realized I never needed to eat anything.
Is this a known issue, or can it be fixed somewhere in the save folder maybe?
Are you in Peaceful or Creative mode?

No, that's the point, I definitely created a singleplayer survival world with structures on, bonusbox off and commands off,
World creation default, and a seed of 1234567890, just for if anything happens.
Any ideas?
you didnt answer his question
"Are you in Peaceful or Creative mode?"
No, that's the point,...
How is that not an answer?

so again, any ideas?
Okay, now we're getting somewhere, it says difficulty normal with next to it a small button with what I presume is an open lock icon.
If you click on the "Opened lock" icon, the difficulty will be locked.

Well, locking the difficulty to normal seems to have done the trick, the hunger bar now slowly depletes over time.
I'm still puzzled why it didn't work without locking, but at least the world now functions as I expected.
Thanks all, one is never too old to learn.
Well, I hate to rekindle this thread, but I still can't get hunger to work as it should.
Every other survival world I create with difficulty normal has a hunger bar that doesn't deplete.
Locking the normal setting what seemed to work the first time was probably a glitch since with other worlds created it doesn't change a thing.
So, back to square one, anyone any other ideas?
are you playing in a server?
Can you give us a screenshot of the difficulty of your world?

Well, I play on the local server that Minecraft creates in single player game on your own PC.
The image below are the options of a new created survival world showing the difficulty setting for it
I presume this is what you wanted to see?

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
It's way too much nerfing!
