I'm in 1.13.1 Java Edition on a server. I set up one of those fish farms with the trap door. When I watch it, it does great, so I thought I'd leave it running overnight. When I came back this morning, I'd only gained 2 XP levels (going from level 10 to level 12) and fished about a dozen items, which tells me it probably only ran about 10-20 minutes before stopping. (When I watch it fish for 20-30 minutes I get more XP and items than that.)
My game was still running when I woke it up, so I don't think it disconnected me (although it's hard to tell because when I wake up my computer it sends me to the "back to game" screen). So my question is, does the AFK stop working when my laptop goes to sleep? I had expected it to keep running until I stopped it, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Do I need to force the computer to not fall asleep to get it to work?
This may vary by model, but – when a computer 'goes to sleep' –I would expect it to stop reading input from the mouse & keyboard (particularly a string of the same inputs which could be caused accidently when the user was storing the computer).
A simple test with and without sleep mode enabled should answer your question WRT your computer.
It is also possible that the server is set to 'kick' users detects AFKing. If, however, others can AFK without this happening, the issue would likely be on your end.

My laptop doesn't sleep when Minecraft is running full screen (seemingly by default). Fairly sure sleep mode will pause the game which is why your fishing stopped. I sometimes find my game paused when Microsoft decide to send me a message about something (that I invariably don't want).
There must be a way to prevent your computer sleeping when minecraft is running. I suggest Google.....
Thank you for all your encouragement. I do think the issue is the computer is going to sleep. I’ll try disabling that and see if that helps.
Yes I am leaving Minecraft as the active program, but I must have a setting somewhere that has the computer itself going to sleep after a certain amount of time because the screen is going black. Minecraft must not like that.

Yeah, this. Don't know how many times I've been popped out of AFK by a modal dialog box from some stupid thing. Really a pain. Some of them get through even with notifications turned off.

I would think the computer shouldn't go to sleep if it's got an active program.
When you AFK, do you leave the focus on Minecraft or do you have some way of doing other things while Minecraft runs in the background?
If you change the focus from Minecraft maybe you should try putting it back before leaving the computer.
But I'm sure your computer has some setting for disabling auto sleep, just be careful to turn it back on when it would be useful.
Just testing.
