Baically a charge to the flank wth swords to a.kill some people then run away to soften them up or b. a rush to a specific goal ex. Ablow there tnt canons up. also an advantage might be t rush enemies with a bucket of lava and burn them
Als ive been thinking of the weaknessesto cavary. Water and lava would beaproble. Also tripwire traps might bevery effectie against horsmen since there farther frm the ground and have a horse in there view.
Oh ps we are assuming that all of this is being done on an optimal war server
oh and splash invisibility potions are over powered if you make your horse and you invsible!
Flank attacks in Minecraft seem of little value. In games in the total warr series, they are useful since the soldiers are too stupid to turn around before enemy cavalry charges them in the rear, but Minecrafters wouldn't be so stupid. Even if they were that stupid, it wouldn't be particularly effective since there aren't shield or anything in Minecraft, so hitting someone in the back is no more effective than hitting someone from the front. It could be useful for taking out enemy archers, if they have any behind the front lines.

First of all, this is an epic thing!
Second, I am with you with the war idea.
Third, you would be a great leutnant to lead an entire army.
Exspecially, if there is war, there MUST be evolution. So the years/times would be a good idea too, like the flans mod, just the times go until....(how it would be managable)... I don't think we are going to go to the modern days, but... to a motorized time, like WWI.
First it starts off with stoneage(?) -> (roman age - server slot problem) -> middle age -> civil war (guns and horses) -> WWI (my favourite )
So if you ever feel like it, we could talk about some cool features for the same, old -mining and building a own home in a middle aged world- game. It could use some pepp with strategic war, evolution and new invetions and countries with resources that are needed for weapons, armor, artillery, bunkers and at last for vehicles... A complete new gamemode for minecraft!

I take it you're reply to me post, so next time please press the "reply" button. For the flanking thing, as long as you have your lines deep enough, I don't seen an issue with being attacked on multiple sides, since the individual soldiers will only be fighting on 1 side.

I found out that ladders are exceptionally useful for making underwater and even undermagma "trenches".

While they might be largely useless if your submarine systems exist entire of those trenches (easily visible from the surface of water, unless it's REALLY deep like water world superflat), putting such a fragment of a tunnel exposed every now and then (preferably somewhat strategically, ofc) does make for a fishing/observation/escape point.
And if you're cautious and patient enough you can even make tunnels hidden beneath the magma, but I don't know how useful would that be compared to full underground passages.

No,BrahMastra is saying that the older people are not willing to form clans large enough for warfare, since they can't stand being with the younger players. Frankly this seems a little illogical, since the younger players can just form clans with other younger players, and the older players can form clans with other older players.
Almost every strategy in te book can be defeated by a person in god armor rushing and spam clicking. Any word on the mythical "tacticians paradise" server? You know, the one that some guy posts on every clan topic? He always says it is coming soon, but it never does.

Interesting ideas, never knew factions could do that. Still, my concern is that people will just be watching a faction until all of them log out, and so due to the timer, will greif the base right after everyone in the faction has logged out, but the timer hasn't finished.
Another idea that might fix the problem would be to have all blocks be breakable at all times, regardless of if another faction owns them, but only have the server up for a limited, but regular time. This could allow for players from your faction to be able to defend the base at all times to protect the base, while still providing a disincentive to logging out.
Obviously, stupid.
I still don't think almost any of these ideas are usefull for Vanilla, or in really any PvP. The underground bases are on the right track, but people will /kill themselves in jail, /spawn, or even tell thier friends your cords. Once your base is empty of people, they will come back, so all your "defences" are worthless, and no, you can't practicly have a guard around the clock. If you want to try these ideas on a real SMP server, try Nagura (look it up on these forums) and start attacking the factions who never read these exept for fun or ideas, never for strategy.
Not all self-repairing walls require pistons, and I never use pistons in mine. And I think you're thinking a little more individual PvP instead of warfare as discussed in this thread. If you have a decent clan, building such a wall could take less than an hour, and traps like the murder bridge can be useful in certain situations. It's not so unusual to see such an overhang or natural bridge.
Fyi, this thread has been discontinued, and the original AoW by Valerius Maximus was started up again a few months ago. You should go there, as it's much more current and active.

This is terribly contrived, and as such, ruins immersion. Are you going to have the gods smite you if you don't leave an entrance for the enemy into your base?

Again, very contrived, having you somehow get hurt by breaking blocks. I would think it would be better to have It just take a very long time breaking enemy blocks.

also, then you can just brick youself in if it doesnt have a entrance, this is becuase, how will you get in if you dont have a entrance, remember, hidden entrances are ok, you can like have a button hundreds of blocks away, linked to redstone, so by the time you reach the door, its open for you. this was also set up in my mind, for planning, so you have to take into account, that theres a entrance, and plan with traps/men accordingly, also becuase there is no teleporting, how will you get in if you dont have a entrance, also we have a portcullis plugin, so you can just close the gate/passageway when they are coming.

I don't know of any plugins that make it take longer to break blocks, but I doubt it would be too hard to make. The length of time to break blocks is probably just determined by a single variable. Also, If you make it so blocks are breakable, but just take a long time to break, boxing yourself in will not protect you.

I dislike how you have to have at least 3 players in your faction to claim land, it's a needless restriction. Plus it seems almost no-one goes on it, so it will be hard finding anyone to fight. The server seems to be whitelisted, so if you could un-whitelist it, you'll probably have more players willing to go on. I'll have to go on the server to see more what it's like.
