Minecraft doesn't really have any situations in which you would defend unmined ores. If you knew there were many unmined ores in one spot, you would have already mined them before building that bridge. Remember that minecraft has an infinite world. There are infinite ores to find, and they are easy to find.
Also, to siege the full circumference of a base would take too much effort. The enemies are not going to watch you build these structures, and they will try to circumvent any man made structure they see. If you had enough power to hold a siege, you would have enough power to simply go in and defeat them.
Aside from that, does anybody know any sort of equation for TNT propulsion? That would allow one to hit objects spot on on their first try if they know the coords.
I enjoyed reading the thread and i have a few ways for defense.

In the rare chance a base is attack you should have a room which is one way and has a lever activating tnt in the base as a failsafe denying them the base will keeping you alive in that tiny failsafe room where you can rebuild the base.
Piston traps.
Pistons can kill because when the move blocks, those blocks can trap you and kill you. This allows you to make hidden door ways and kill foes by crushing them.
Lava moats.
Plain and simple a 10 block dep lava moat is deadly and can deter many foes add holes which to poor lava into makes a deadly fortress.

I love this, but... there is one problem, NO SERVER ACTUALLY HAS ABOVE GROUND FORTS LIKE THIS! All bases are underground, and there is no fighting, only griefing when the other person is offline. Sooo.... If such a server that the Art of War is set in actually exist, PLEASE, let me in :biggrin.gif:, but since theres not, we need to think of defences that work while your offline, stealthy but effective base designs, and ways to attack these bases (if that actually ever even happens >.>)

A good underground base (like everyone else makes) would need to be sorta small, have a farm for wheat,trees, and maybe sugar cane and animals. It would need a mob grinder for bones and such, I would honestly like to make it feel above ground as well, but thats hard.
Wait, is this PVP server faction based, as to actually put into practice all of these things we've been discussing?

I am only 12 but can make near-undefusable tnt traps and are an expert in cannon making. I am great with a bow, moderately good at the sword, good with water buckets, and have an evil wicked mind when it comes to fire/lava/mines. I am also a strategist and are reading Sun Tzu's Art Of War. I hope when the server comes out I can be a useful fighter and contribute a lot.

Well I made this post and then Valerus_Maximus quit on his thread, so I don't want this to go to waste:
I think that one cumulative minecraft war mod should be constructed (possibly two: one for swords and bows type warfare and one for modernminecraft warfare) good examples of mods with varying fullness are: SDK's Guns, Flans Planes, Alblaka's Mediavalcraft, More weapons and, the 2x2 crafting grid Ect.
Also a team making mod such as flans team mod could be utilized by itself.

Now for the serious stuff:
First of all: defences can never be unipeneretrable and useful at the same time ( yes you could have an adminuim cube covered in 3 layers of obsidian and lava but it would be completely useless because the inhabiting team can not even get inside unless they utilize a portal to the inside. (which would make it hopelessly vulnerable)
The purpose of defences is simply to slow down the enemy forces and give the inhabitants an advantage against attackers.
Personally I think that many amazing defences and forms of attack can be devised with the minecraft physics and especially the new features which have been added recently. Personally I think that combinations of multiple defencive concepts will make a highly difficult fortress to penetrate.
One such utilization of combination of defensive techniques and mechanics is "The Cage"
which has been called obsolete however I have added a feature to it that uses pressure plate activated pistons to drop both water and lava on the infiltrator. the lava blocks the entrance and lets freindly members know that the trap has been activated. The water helps to push the unwitting tresspasser into the soulsand part of the trap.
to activate the TNT since no redstone conponent may be placed on TNT anymore there is a gravel or sand with the wood PP on it and 5 adjacent TNT (on sides and bottom) one or more of the corners of the TNT layer should be filled with water to reduce physical damage to the trap.
I am very interested in the pulsing piston wall combined with bricks (for increased TNT resistance) and water/lava also Is it waterproof? I shall test this,(It turns out that the pulsing wall is waterproof and waterproofing it will give it a 90% to 50% chance to remain completely unscathed by TNT explosion otherwise a TNT will blow up a brick layered pulser-wall And it's pistons
I have a great idea for a near impenetrable fortress with murder holes. XP
I am especially interested in the possiblity of an organized CubicChunks server with many Large clans on as the much larger limits allow many more interesting possiblities such as more viable by far sky fortresses and vast underground complexes hidden far far underground
this also allows a technical much larger abundance of the rarer materials for larger more extensive bases
it will obviously be CHOCOLATE ORE
used to make cocoa beans and CHOCOLATE CAKE and CHOCOLATE INGOTS
CHOCOLATE INGOTS will be used to make CHOCOLATE TOOLS which are obviously much stronger than diamond and also may be eaten if you are hungry.

I believe you are talking about a self building castle? Those castles are always so difficult to take down. You would need a sabature to take out the pistons.

Just thought of something. Would it be unpractical to, after a spy has reported back to base with your base's location and how to get there, to rearrange the landscape after he's gone to render his instructions hopelessly useless? You know, move a few hills here and there to confuse soldiers with orders like "Go to the ridge on you're left. Then..."

Again, the point of the murder bridge is not to keep enemies from walking around.
It's to keep them from entering the canyon, which supposedly has some importance to you. You're picturing it in the wrong circumstance.
You saw how devastating a Murder Bridge is, would you want to walk under it?
