Just needed a lot of slime-balls for a major sticky-piston project and figured a perfect way to get them. Went to the swamp at dusk and built up a 2x2 tower 6 blocks high with me on top. Stood there with an Infinity bow shooting things all night. Have to watch for Skellies and get them first though. Next morning after the zombies burnt up in sun light the slimes did not burn up and I killed off enough to get over a dozen slime balls.
I wonder if I made it 4 blocks tall I could take out the Endermen safely by letting them aggro me and hit them from above. One did aggro as I looked in it's eyes accidently, but it couldn't get to me and went away come morn.
You should build a slime farm. This is a relatively simple one I use in several worlds, and it works well.
Find a slime chunk, dig it out (+1 block extra for edge spawns), and place an iron golem on top of a block, on top of a cactus.
Surround the golem with fences to keep him in place.
Surround the cactus with hoppers feeding into a chest (to collect the slime balls).
That's it, you're done!
As long as you are in range of the farm (close enough to keep the slime chunk loaded, but further than 24 blocks away) slimes will spawn and try to attack the golem, bump against the cactus and die (dropping slime balls into the hoppers).
If you spawn block the surrounding area to prevent nearby mob spawns, the farm will really take off and produce loads of slime balls! But even without the area prep you should still get a good amount of slime balls.
Pictures above are a farm I built in my main SSP world using 2 diagonally adjacent slime chunks. It's actually under water (see the glass ceiling above golem in the first picture), so I didn't have to worry about surface spawn blocking and only lit up nearby caves. I started to dig out a lower level, but decided I didn't need it since the existing level really cranks out the slime balls.

I actually levelled a swamp biome and built a permanent tower in the middle area with a beacon array for attacking slimes and collecting slime balls when i needed to make loads of blocks to clear my first Ocean monument close by. I also use it during thunderstorms to maximise the chances of getting a charged creeper (had around four from it so far)
