You sir have inspired me to make an adjusted challenge.
I'm having trouble with the mushrooms and gravel. If you have tips on how to get some of them, do share. :tongue.gif:
Gravel? Don't "try to get gravel". It will come in time. Don't discard that stack of 30 gravel after each mining expedition. It adds up, fast. If you must go for it, just grab it while mining. Never waste your time looking for gravel. One day, you will have 10 chests of it and wonder why you bothered.
Kastrel, is your collection point 24 blocks away of the spawning grounds? Do the items get stuck anywhere? Do the mobs clog up anywhere? Is the collection points over 100 blocks away from the spawning grounds?
Some stuff you could check for your mob system. I have never build a mob system, and I have never seen Kiershar's mob trap either, so I have no idea what could be wrong. I prefer Etho's and Docm's mob systems.
Most of the super spawners are TOO good; I don't need 10,000 items an hour. -snip-
You might. Sure, you only need one chest of feathers and arrows, and 6 gunpowder (5 for TNT). But you'll need a lot of string for the 16 chests of diffrent colored wool (shearing sheap would be way to much of a hassle), besides the other things that need string and wool, and you'll probably want to use bonemeal for all the wheat and the things you make with it, as well as the massive amount of wood you're going to need. And bonemeal is the only way to farm flowers, which you'll need for dyes.
Then again, this sounds like it will take a very long time to complete no matter what, so a smaller one might do since you'll get all you need over time, but a better one might speed things up.

String seems a very inefficient way to make wool, a maximum spawn passive mob farm can produce tons of sheep and with the new shears, you can now feasibly get 4 blocks per sheep. Killing sheep in a grinder now drops one wool compared to zero before so you could go afk and collect tons of wool overnight.
The best way to get coloured wool is to dye the sheep then shear it which takes far less time than killing all the spiders, making the wool and then dying the wool individually which requires one dye per wool, not good for blue wool. The mob grinder isn't exactly good for coloured wool as that has to be manually collected for maximum efficiency.
Also, string needs to be put towards other things like fishing rods, bows or dispensers. 14,094 string is needed for everything there unless I have missed something which is a ton of spiders (~14,000 since a spider can drop between 0-2 pieces)
ps. Didn't Kastrel say that he wasn't going to focus on coloured wool and dyes due to the lengthy-ness of doing so?

Too many humans, not enough space or resources to go around. The details are trivial and pointless, the reasons, as always, purely human ones...
What I'm going to do for wool is this: Constantly shear sheep in my passive mob system, while spiders get killed in the hostile mob system. No need to choose wether you kill spiders or sheep, just do both :biggrin.gif: .
Also: I jus lots a single chest of sand cause a creeper blew up in my temporary mini-base, also blowing up my bed.. So I spawned miles away. I'm glad the sandstone and glass chest were saved :smile.gif: .

You could try making a mini vault so that one of the doors is always closed to the storage, like an airlock of sorts.

As I said, my "temporary mini-base" got blown up, my final base is going to be inaccessable to mobs. I don't think mobs can swim at least 100 blocks, then jump on a platform, drop into a waterbreak, run towards a button, press the button and then find the chest they want to blow up. I think I'll be safe xD .
Also, just found a dungeon with 57 mossy cobble, I think that's quite alot :ohmy.gif: . I usually find 45-50.
I'm gonna try to do this in November, once the full release comes out because I'm tired of needing to reset my world every update for new content. I'm also against the idea of making a new world and copying all my items and buildings on it with MCEdit. I don't know, it just doesn't feel right to have non-renewable items such as diamond, clay, dirt, sand, obsidian (etc.) on a newly created world where they aren't supposed to exist. I'm just too pedantic. Anyhow, good luck on your challenge!

I think your base is a bit too strenuous to get to, my main storage compartment is only a door and a 10 block walk away from the outside. I even had a creeper come in and stare at me while I was mining obsidian in my redstone>obsidian generator. He just stood there and walked off, I followed him and sliced him up, turns out he'd jump through an open window in my wolf sanctuary.

It's not that bad actually. I don't have to swim 100 blocks, then jump on the platforum, drop into the waterbreak and press the button all the time, cause I'm already underground 95% of the time.
Little progress update on my single chest challenge: Dug out my 30x30 mob spawning grounds. In the progress of that I noticed I am actually quite close to filling a single chest of gravel too. Now just to make the water canals, killing mechanisms, light up caves, the control panel, the record studio, passive mob system... Sooo much work xD . I'm glad I enjoy digging soo much .
EDIT: [email protected]@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ My world got corrupted or something -.- . While building my mob spawner my comp crashed, when I restarted there was no more world.. I dont have any back ups. I WANT MY WORLD BACK :sad.gif: . I have no idea where it is now.

My collection point is 24 (its about 25-26) blocks away from the spawner. The items do not get stuck, not do the mobs clog up. I watch my mob system with F3, and I KNOW the problem is that mobs don't spawn in it, or they don't do so consistantly. I did a LOT of lighting up stuff the other day, and it definitely helped, but its clearly not enough. I got about 75 gunpowder in about an hour which is . . . something. The problem is it too stopped producing after long, and needs babysitting.
My friends made a piston machine that was great for flint. You put a stack of gravel in the device, walk over, hold down left click.
And by the way, do you have a redstone to obsidian device?
EDIT: I sometimes get obsessed with certain threads.... It must feel like I'm stalking you Kastrel!
I tried to make a piston machine for gravel but it was destroying gravel blocks at a tremendous rate. About 1/2 of the stack ended up as a drop, and somehow, these were getting shoved into walls somewhere and being lost. I was losing a large % of my invested gravel each run.
I don't have a redstone obsidian device because, A. It doesn't really reduce the time of harvesting, which is the primary issue with obsidian, B. It costs redstone which is a resource I have a lot of, but not enough yet to invest another 3456, and C. Its definitely a glitch way above what I am willing to exploit.
On C, I am willing to use certain glitches, such as signs blocking water flow, which makes things like grinders more streamlined, but not things like duplication or redstone/obsidian conversion, because this is much more of an exploitation of the mechanics. It might seem a subtle difference to distinguish. For instance, I use F3 to analyze spawner effectiveness, but that doesn't suddenly GIVE me the items I want.
You might. Sure, you only need one chest of feathers and arrows, and 6 gunpowder (5 for TNT). And bonemeal is the only way to farm flowers, which you'll need for dyes.
16 chests of wool, plus one more for paintings, is 1 quarter million string. And most super mob spawners, the ones I wouldn't use because they were TOO good, are designed to prevent spiders from even spawning, so I wouldn't be getting string from them.
Bonemeal is not an issue. I have a double skeleton dungeon grinder which gives me far more bones than I need. I already have a chest of each flower type, and nearly a chest of yellow dye. I only need that for orange dye, then I need red for orange purple pink and magenta. Thats a lot, but not outside my ability to make. The lapis is FAR, FAR more a difficult thing to come by.
Even with all this said; I've excluded dye and dyed wools from my required collection simply because its such an absurd amount of wool and certain dye ingredients, such as lapis. I may consider one day doing yellow, green, and lime green . . . but for the time being, anything that requires rose red, ink sacks, lapis, or cocoa beans is not really within my ability to make right now.
Also, string needs to be put towards other things like fishing rods, bows or dispensers. 14,094 string is needed for everything there unless I have missed something which is a ton of spiders (~14,000 since a spider can drop between 0-2 pieces)

Thats a lot, but a spider dungeon would be more than sufficient. Dispensers are very low on my list of priorities, as I consider them a very low use item with a high investment cost (7 chests of cobble, a 3rd of a chest of wood, and a chest of redstone is never a trifle, to say nothing of 3 chests of string).
And yes, I will not focus on wool and dyes, with some exceptions (white wool, lapis, bonemeal, ink sacks)
I'm surprised that my progress is a bit farther than yours. I must ask you though, how big is your world?
About 70 megs. What areas are you thriving in, out of curiousity? I'm curious if its things that I just suck at getting, and you've just done a better job of it, or if its things that I can make but don't feel like it since I'm still gathering base resources. I harvest wood ALL the time. =p

I'm quite the shady customer.

Put it in a world recovery thread or something.
suicideerr... i mean impossible mincraft questWhat this does is it copies every changed save over to /saves2/ so you always have a backup.
Hope this helps some people.
Minecraft.bat:
set APPDATA=%cd%
cd .\.minecraft
xcopy saves saves2 /I /Y /S /D
cd..
Minecraft.exe
Good to know! Does it overwrite previous back ups?
