I'm not going to bother with maps. I've stored the only one I ever made and that's it- other than that one I put it on my excluded list. I noticed over the weekend my excluded list is smaller than yours, since I'm collecting iron & gold ore along with ingots & blocks! There was something else I noticed but can't remember off the top of my head.
Edit:
I remember the missing item!
There was no entry for glass in the "points" game you posted, Kastrel.
Oh wow, I haven't looked at the home game post for a while, since no one seemed to have ANY interest in it! I fixed it though; I put it in the second tier.
Unless such a time arrives that raw ore has some outside purpose, I doubt I will ever include it. Unlike raw wood, its not more compact, its not easily to change into ingots, and while it might have a SMALL amount of aesthetic building purposes, its tremendously limited. And in the case of gold, its a massive additional investment; another 50% more gold.
And blocks of gold and diamond are outright too much. I'm even starting to question if iron blocks is such a good idea, but I think if I cop-out on iron then I really have gotten too lazy. Lapis though, I still think is too hard.

I made a notepad copy of it when I saw it, but I was focused on finishing up my underground fortress more than collecting at the time. I still have to finish counting up because my chests are in a different order than your list.
I'm keeping ore just because I had made chests for it when I built my collection area. If I eliminate them, I'll have ugly gaps! And compared to filling the blocks chests- ore will be a piece of cake. I've mined so much iron in my world, I could probably be a long ways along the blocks if I hadn't used it all on rails. I have double rails running long distances all over my world. I've started pulling much of it up though if I'm going to have to abandon my world for 1.8, I might as well recycle the valuable materials from buildings I'll be abandoning.
I tried going out pork/wool/clay hunting last night, but kept filling up my inventory before getting very far. How do you deal with that? Do you drop chests then go back to reclaim them later?

I have only a small bit of rails in my world (for some reason, I've never mastered advanced cart mechanics), maybe 300 and a dozen at most booster rails? But I too will pull them up when I leave.
Well, when I passive mob hunt, I do it around my spawn base, which is a small stone outpost surrounded by a very large area of treeless plains. I circle around the area incessantly, looking for passives, and I deposit my pork in chests in the spawn base. I usually don't try to do too much mob hunting when I'm on the go, because that pork fills up fast.
In between hunting, when there is nothing around, I stop by my jury-rigged squid grinder. Its working amazingly well. It was originally a floating island in the sky, that was carved out like a bowl and filled with water. The bottom had a small glass box inside that I could live in. Well, I just broke the dirt in a 3x3 shape, put signs on it, and voila! I get dozens of ink sacks an hour, which is more than enough, since its smack dab in the middle of my hunting grounds. All I have to do is collect the drops every 2 or 3 minutes, I don't even have to sit in it.
If your objective is to store chests full of items in anticipation of future use of those items, then yes, compasses and paper are more useful than maps. However, I can't think of a project that might use 54 maps. Therefore, you're collecting for the sake of collecting, in which case a chest full of maps is the way to go.
Regarding pork: Have a look on YouTube at some automated mob processing systems. You can kill pigs by having them fall through a lava block suspended over a sign. They die on fire, and so drop cooked pork. Control the lava flow with a piston, and you can have a cooked/raw toggle switch.
Plus if it is a gravity mob trap it acts as a chicken killer too.
I'm leaving maps completely out and only making them so I can charter my world in an orderly fashion so there is no gap or overlap between connecting maps.
Also, kill pigs for 64 double chests, then go to the nether and kill pigmen for the cooked variety, saves on coal (or any other fuel). Pigmen are plentiful, easy to find and not much of a hassle to kill assuming you have good equipment.
I'm also doing that as well. On my old computer I had a program which told me what coordinates would make a perfect map that contains none of the map that is ex: to the right of it. I wish I had remembered the name though because I had planned to have in the chest the spawn map in the sorta center seeing as it as 6 by 9 and then putting the right one to the right of that and so on and so on.

My rail system was all built with the old hi-speed boosters so I'll have a lot of minecarts not so much booster rails Although I have gone back and retrofited some of it with the new boosters, there's no point in re-doing it all right now.
I did find a large plains area not too far from my underground base. I think I'll terraform it and do something similar tonight!
About 1/2 way with the redecoration, and increasing my storage area of my base (the majority of the 38x38 floor is Chest/Crafting Tables in a grid)
Though I did fall in lava last night, my first death on this save and I lost almost a full stack of chests, crafting tables, a mostly new diamond sword along with prob 18 iron ingots and a few other things. About 2 hours later I had it replaced.. man what a bummer! Though I have made my first cake ever to add to the wall, along with the first dungeon/mossy cobble/saddle/cocoa so those have also been added.
Just need to add in Netherrack/Soulsand/Glowstone/Glowdust and I think my dispensers will be complete and then I can count my chests and hopefully I should have enough. By my guesstimates I have placed about 280 chests so far, and need to place about another 298 depending on how I fill things out. Now I don't plan on collecting 256 chests or whatever of Pork so I think this storage area should be sufficient. I will have over 700 chests in my storage area when it is complete in the range of 350 double chest when all are counted I think. Now when you count I also have around 150 dispensers.. well I have a lot of storage and if I ever fill it all up I will be surprised.
Good morning all (where I am at)
I have been finishing up the Skytrap. It has taken a bit...but I am getting there. I am finding it very hard not to clear out everything under the trap instead of doing tunnels like it is advised.
@ Kastrel when you cleared out below did you just make tunnels?
I am done with my reeds and I am now working on my books.

Underneath my sky trap, I did three layers of diamond branch mines; at layers 7 and 8, layers 10 and 11, and layers 13 and 14. Basically, I skipped a layer between each, and I staggered them so they were placed over the middle of the ones beneath it. I did notice a small improvement in output, but nothing significant. Unless you are attempting to get wool from the spiders, I have a feeling the benefit of TRULY clearing it all out is going to be minimal. It would be a lot of time mining, and you may as well just put the work towards sitting in the stream. That being said, branch out the diamond area, since those are in high enough demand, and its killing two birds with one stone.
Also, books and bookshelves suck. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't take 1.5 chests of wood.
oh i won't use spiders to get wool. I use my sheep for that. I have two double chests full of wool. One is white and the other is red.
Wool for me right now is easy to get:)
I just want the drops that the mobs give. Getting diamonds...now that I want:)
Edit:
As for clearing out below my skytrap your advice is great. Thank you:)
The bad thing about the books is I have been planning on building a rather large sprawling house at some point in time and well a library is in the plan:) So...i have some work cut out for me.
Bricks
0/54 stacks
Brick
7/54 stacks
Clay (balls)
54/54 Stacks
Clay (Blocks or 4 sets of the clay balls made into a block)
8/54 Stacks
Went hunting for clay and found several deposits that gave me 5 to 6 stacks of 64 clay balls. I already had 3/4 of a chest full of the clay balls.
I love it when a plan comes together:)
I've been busy building mushroom farm, reed farm, cactus farm, larger tree farm and a surface canal-style mob trap. I want to add another 10 or so levels to the mushroom farm. My reed farm gives a stack+ every time I harvest so I may call it complete. My cactus farm (using pistons) needs to be greatly expanded, but I haven't figured out yet if I want to build it up or out. My tree farm is in the process of being enlarged and I still need to build a wheat farm. These are all dug out at bedrock level and graveling the lava is taking the most time!
My surface mob farm is kind of erratic. Some mobs don't die after falling 27 spaces, so I'm re-building the killing part about 10 blocks farther down. Also the mobs I'm catching- sometimes it works great, sometimes not- I left it running overnight while I slept and when I woke up, I had about 20 stacks of eggs and nothing else :sad.gif:
I also updated part of my progress list, and decided to post what I have for posterity :smile.gif: I'll try and finish it tonight if I don't get distracted working on my various farms!
Oh Evil One you have quite the collection going:) that is good...the thing that side tracks me is exploring topside. I keep telling myself that I will never explore the whole world. But I keep trying. I am using gravel on my lava now as i really and truly have more than i need made into obsidian. I have been looking and seeing so many interesting builds. One of them is yours.
So i try to focus on one or two things at a time:)
