So I accidentally started a game with cheats enabled, even though I always turn off mob griefing. I haven't made all that much progress, but enough that I'd rather just enable cheats instead of starting a whole new world. Is it possible to enable cheats without starting over? If so, how?
You can open your world to LAN, and then set cheats enabled there. I'm not entirely sure if it will transition over when you close the world though. Another thing you can do is edit your level.dat file and change some of the values.

It won't. It's on a per-session basis. Once you close and reopen the world, both LAN mode and cheats will again be disabled (any changes you've made to the gamemode or gamerules, for example. will carry over, though.)

This also works. I recommend NBTExplorer. Navigate to "[World Name] -> level.dat -> data -> allowCommands" and change the value from 0 to 1. Then save and quit. Alternatively, you could just set the gamerule while you're at it instead of or in addition to enabling the commands. That'd be in "data -> GameRules -> mobGriefing," and change the value from "true" to "false."

Yea, that's what I thought would happen. It works on a one-time basis, but you would have to reopen to LAN every time.... I think really the only way is to edit your level.dat file.

If he just wants to set the gamerule, he doesn't necessarily need cheats each time. He could just start LAN one time, enable cheats, set the gamerule, and be done with it. Cheats won't be enabled next time, but the gamerule will still be changed.

Erm... what program works for opening *.data files. Notepad seems to be a no go.

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
