Have you tried to just close the launcher while the game is up an running? If not, try it. If so, then it might not be up to date like I saw some others post. You could try re-downloading it and that should give you the newest version. There shouldn't be anything else wrong with it or your computer.
I'm inclined to agree with the OP. Although the new launcher is nice if you want to play around with options it should still really function like the old launcher in that it has a simple face anyone can use quickly to get in the game and close itself out or provide the options it presents now to the user should they want that. Either way the launcher should close on it's own when the game launches and it isn't doing that now automatically like it did before.
Sadly, there is a problem with this launcher, which since it opens a second application to play, you can't allocate ram to Minecraft anymore. Of course not a problem for me, fast computer. Usually 150 frames. But just saying here...
Are you using the latest launcher? Cause if you edit the profile, you can change the RAM setting for MC.
After reading so many posts about the launcher, it seems that Mojang needs to have two versions.. one for people that want to be able to run multiple versions, have saves in different location.. and then one that's basically "Minecraft for Dummies".. i.e. super simple, no options, pretty much like the old one... but then again, people always just freak out about change.

._. with the new launcher you can add a feature to change how much Ram you put into Minecraft. Click on "Edit Profile" on the top right and check "JVM Arguments", say you want 4 Gigs to run Minecraft, you'd change that to -Xmx4G.
While you need the same amount of clicks to get into the main menu as before (1), the OP is right in that the new launcher is pretty clunky still. I have faith that the programmers will add an option that makes the launcher automatically close when the game starts (without errors). Would be even better if there was a parameter you could pass to the launcher to make it "click" the play button automatically for you and skip the launcher altogether from the user's perspective. Like Minecraft.exe --autostart

It just makes me lag dude, ok? You seriously can not take no for an answer.
The Launcher is Great!! You just have to get used to it. Don't worry I didn't like it the first snapshot i saw it either.
I'll will eventually get use to how the directory is sorted. Dinnerbone did say improvements are coming soon to it's look.
At first site, Yep you can tell it was made by a programmer xD
My work blocks the connection to the server. I used to be able to just play offline and update the game by playing on the web site. Now that there is the launcher it grays out the play button until it connects so no more play offline option and therefore no more lunch time minecraft. I'm not even bothering to update at home. Vanilla minecraft with mo creatures mod is way better than 1.6 anyway and without the stupid launcher and the villagers endlessly saying, "hmmm hmmm hmmm".
I kinda agree. I don't like the way the new launcher I layed out. It's not enough for me to never use it, but they could have done everything they are doing now without a new launcher, just adding tabs. Unfortunately, OP, I don't think it is possible to bypass the new launcher. Though I do like the features it has, such as automatically downloading the snapshots, etc.

yess this is what im looking for I just wanna click on the minecraft shortcut and be playing. I don't see the need to have all of those personalizational features every time. I wish the was a button on the old style launcher where if you wanted to, click a button to take you to all the customizable features
Then you're not looking at the right spot. I see it both on my Mac and on my Windows.
In the development console tab, after clicking on "play" :
---- YOU CAN CLOSE THIS LAUNCHER IF THE GAME STARTED OK ----
---- YOU CAN CLOSE THIS LAUNCHER IF THE GAME STARTED OK ----
---- YOU CAN CLOSE THIS LAUNCHER IF THE GAME STARTED OK ----
---- (We'll do this automatically later ;D) ----
Just close the launcher.
If the launcher isn't providing a common experience across platforms then I'm guessing something isn't right. He has to be looking at the right spot because the launcher goes to the dev console to display all that information. That is stuff people really don't need to see by default. Also the lost functionality of the launcher closing itself is still a programming issue that the user shouldn't have to deal with.

Since you could setup a batch file in the past to start minecraft and skip the launcher, the answer should be yes.. It's just that someone needed to figure out how to do that.. It appears someone now has... Check this thread for the info...

I recently figured out how to run minecraft from a bat with the help of other forum members. If you set it up correctly it launches the game instantly like how you want-just double click on the grass block on your desktop (or whatever). There are some major downsides though, such as not being able to play online and being forced to update manually. If you still want that though I can tell how how to set it up.
Your avatar suits you perfectly. That might as well just be a webcam feed.
On the launcher problem/genius idea I really don't see how you can complain about this. If your pc is laggy that is not the launcher's fault. The new launcher will get a lot more love than hate so you are going to have to bite the bullet.
Love it or hate it, it works!
Biting bullet's is my specially. They feel like they wound my opinion but in reality, my opinion is immortal and is only changed by logical or supernatural thoughts.
(I could have summed that up with what doesn't kill you makes you stronger but I wanted to give a speech cause I am bored as and listening to dubstep chilling while I wait for someone with a jTag and XBLS to mod my BO:2 zombies and multiplayer stats.)
Well mine isn't. I have the most craptop because my school wanted to be cheap even though they forced us to pay for it.
I can't, I am forced to have it for school. I am selling my dirtbike and buying a decent laptop though :/
It just makes me lag dude, ok? You seriously can not take no for an answer.
Seriously kid. Now I KNOW you are just making stupid crap up to continue this flame war. The only possible way that the launcher, sitting their on your screen, doing absoulutely nothing but displaying a visual graphic of feed coming directly from the minecraft itself, is lagging you out. If it is, this is the mac you have:
It's also nice that you are selling your dirtbike for a nice laptop, but next time, please refrain from purchasing any computer-based subscriptions, such as the curse premium you have there (curse is pretty awesome, do indeed support them!) before you go around and complain that you don't have enough money to buy a new computer.

Oh dam same. I would sell it, It's really not that great
Hey everyone, I'm back!

For example, my problem is the resolution being always on 800 * 600 it really bugs me.
Now I can change the resolution whenever i want, plain and simple!
My craptop is fine with it open and I get around ~30 fps.

However, some people couldn't get it to work so it might be one of those things where it's not easy to setup if you make a single typo for example.
