Nice post this should really help beginners. I do mine tunnels until I come across a cave system and then continue the tunnel after I've explored it. I usually mark where the cave system entrance is though in case I want to return later. A tip that might be of some help to people further along in their world is to bring a few Ender Pearls. It can help you get out and away from Lava if you happen to fall in if you're quick enough. This is only practical if you have already beaten the End Dragon though.
So I don't get lost in caves/mineshafts, I always put my torches on the right side. When I go back, I just follow the torches on the left side.
I have never followed that advice and I always get lost every single time I go mining in caves. I am way too lazy to put torches on one side of the cave.
After having spent the last two days lighting up caves around where I want my witch farm, I've decided on the following:
-Bring Logs. If there's an abandoned mineshaft somewhere in your travels, you can replenish your wood for torches along the way, but don't rely on finding them.
-Bring weapons
-Bring a bucket of water
-Iron armour (enchantments are up to you)
-Bring a few picks, a shovel, and several stacks of torches
-Bring beef (best food item, imo)
-If you come across a mob spawner, write down the coordinates, if you want to come back and make a grinder.
-Search UP first. You can eliminate spawns above you. I find creepers like to dive bomb if you're not careful.
Caves are a GREAT way to find iron. Lots of iron, lots of coal, great source of redstone. Also, Grab all the gold ores you can. They're not valuable, unless you want to build a big network of train tracks. Every bar helps.

Be careful when mining obsidian that you made with water. Many times I have been mining obsidian while walking forward and as the block broke I fell in lava and lost everything:(
Bring good armor. A full set of iron armor or higher is recommended.
I rarely if ever make armor unless it's for armor stands, End Dragon, or blaze/pigman farming. You may need to practice some combat skills if you need armor for a few cave spiders.
Mine around diamonds. If you don't find lava, mine the diamonds, if you do, cover all the lava with blocks then mine it.
Good tip, I'd also do this with Obsidian. No use in spending all that time (well not really but I'm impatient) mining a block of Obsidian for it just to fall in lava.
Bring a water bucket to pour on lava so you don't fall in.
Just use the cobble you attain in masses and create a road across the lava.
Don't mine with TNT. It destroys most of the ores.
Industrial TNT my friend. But yeah, if you're one of those mods are for casuals kinda boys, nothing more fun than exploring with a faithful diamond pick axe with Fortune III
Take the stuff out of your inventory that you don't need.
Stock pile. Bring chests. I'm ALWAYS what do I need this cobble for, what do I need all this redstone for, and I just drop it in lava. The next day I'm always short of something needed for a new project.
Watch out for mobs that could attack you.
Bring lots of torches. Also bring a lot of wood in case you run out of torches.
Torches aren't needed on Bright Brightness settings unless you're building something.
Use ender chests if you have a silk touch pickaxe and the right materials. Also keep an ender chest at your house.
Ender chests are only useful in SSP.
That's all (for now) I will add more soon. if you have something that you think should go on this list, than put it below. I hope this helped!
Not to really derail anything or start an argument, but since when has Minecraft become challenging? All you need is a sword, few pick axes, food, and maybe some chests. The rest you attain along the way.
Agreed.
