i bought a second account simply because of the name i had initally used to register with. I had no intention of playing SMP and I didn't use a name I would use for MP gaming. I ended up liking SMP more than SSP so i got a second account.
It's not like the game is expensive and I can always give the extra copy to somebody if they want one eventaully.
Trying to get games written for windows to work on a Linux machine is like trying to put a diaper on an incontinent buffalo. Sure, you might get it all done, but you'll certainly be left with a huge mess, and it's very time consuming.
I know a ton of people with more than 1, and I personally would also like to get another account. One reason people do this is if they have a staff position on a server they can go on the server under another name and not be spammed with requests for help. Another reason is it can allow for you to have a backup account in case you get banned from a server.
'cause my old account name was tied to an identity I don't want anymore, simple as that!
