I've been working on your design, the biofactory2, but i got a few questions.
How does the "wall sign trick" work?
And is it crucial to the traps success?
Will it work with water leading the mobs into a incinerator?
When i tried to see if mobs were spawning in my trap they didn't move around, well the one creeper that spawned didn't move at all( size: 35x35). Is this because I couldn't get the "wall sign trick" to work?
I've been looking online for several days now and can't seem to find a solution to my problem.
I built a mob grinder almost exactly like your BioFactory 3, and it works quite well for the first minute, or so.
After that, however, it grinds(no pun intended) to a halt producing only about 1 item per 5 seconds.
The mobs/items are not getting stuck. When I use "F3" I can see that they just stop spawning.
I took all the necessary precautions (i.e. filling in caves, making sure all water is flowing correctly, etc.) and I used MCEdit to make sure I was as precise as possible.
I did read on another forum elsewhere that this may be a glitch that causes mob grinders to work on some games and not on others, but I downloaded yours and it runs perfectly for as long as I need it to.
I was wondering if you ever came accross a similar problem while building your grinders, or if anyone else might know what is happening.
Thanks
P.S. One thing that is different is that I didn't build it on a blank map. It is in my current game with generated terrain, but then again, I did make everything within 144 blocks of it solid stone so the output shouldn't be affected.
Currently I'm on SSP, so that may have made a difference, but I want to try expanding my solid stone area around the grinder. I thought 144 blocks was the diameter of the spawn area, but if it's the radius I could be losing over 60% of the mobs that spawn to the surrounding area. I'll try it out.
What exactly do you mean with "solid stone"? Do you use half blocks?
By "solid stone" I was referring to how I completely filled in the area around the grinder, including caves, using the default stone block ( ) in MCEdit. However, I did create a layer of half steps on top of it to prevent mobs from spawning there.
Yesterday I tried expanding the area I had filled in to 256x256x128 blocks. That's also when I made the half step layer. On the first test I could immediately see a difference in the number of mobs spawning over a long period of time. My grinder now works as well as BioFactory 3.
Now I plan to expand it to see just how many mobs I can collect.
Guys, i need advice! I made this trap 2 times already, and it works great! But now I need to find a way how to decrease the lag what its causing a bit. The lag is caused by sings, i know that. Can I replace the sings with something else? What about ladders? and would it work with signs just on one side of each row, and lets say, if i place just every second sign?
thanks for help
No, only signs work. Decreasing the total signs may work, but that's up to you. I can't tell you exactly how that will effect the lag/items per hour.
I just have a quick question which I really hope hasn't already been answered and I just missed. I made the mini version for my single player world and it spawns pretty good even though I still have some caves to light up, but when I stand at the collection point underneath, the spawning really slows down. I'm curious if the reason is because my collection room isn't very far below the tower. How deep below the final point should I make the collection room where I'll stand. Thanks.
That's what I figured but they really seem to just stop spawning after the initial surge when I'm standing underneath it. Is there any other reason the spawning would slow down to such a crawl?
Check out my minecraft tools, mods, or maybe my website! I've got tons of applications (both minecraft related and not) which some of you may find useful. Thanks!

It's because you 'still have caves to light up'. If you don't let mobs spawn anywhere else in your spawn radius, then they'll all spawn inside the mob trap. If the mob spawn rate in the mob trap slows down, then they're spawning elsewhere.

I think spawning is a bit bugged, especially if you travel by minecart. I watched my F3 numbers, and the mob count just kept rising above the max, but without me seeing ANY mobs around at all. When I walked the path instead it wasen't as bad and but still seemed something was off. It says there were 900+ mobs when I went down a 2000 block minecart track and I saw no mobs, but when I walked it it said 200 and saw a few. Its as iff mobs aren't despawning properly even when they die.
okay can someone please reply asap, everytime i click the link for an explanation in this thread it leads back to the thread, are the links not working or do i have to do something wrong
You just dont get minecraft. Its not about the end product, its abut the fun of building it. you would make angry!!!

OT: Howbout just make a quarry and dig to a certian level to make your trap?
