I made the changes indicated, and the 10 story trap now gets a pretty consistent 15k. I used 2 wide strips instead of 3 because 3 didn't seem to improve the drop rate much, surprisingly.
I'm certain we can still drag more and more out of this trap. The kill method is much faster than my tiny trap, which gets just as many drops and is much smaller.
looking at the one on viewtopic.php?f=1020&t=225793&start=240#p3556064, I started trying to make it and found you have fences over water at the bottom. You can't places fences over water without an editor.

You're right, but :
1. Place dirt
2. Place fence over dirt
3. Remove dirt
4. PROFIT !

Huh! Well this is good to know. As we are in the process of building this in our world right now. Ill post some picts here later. Our world is 100% no modding, so things take a bloody long time. >_<

I already built the bottom of the shaft, the acceleration space, and 6 spawning floors, alone. I'll probably post some pics, too. And I agree : damn, it takes a while.
Just had to register to suggest:
If the lava portion of the trap is only needed to deal with any spiders that slide down the walls, why not flare out the falling area by 3-4 blocks so they can't reach the walls.
I got probably a stupid question, sorry if it was already answered... whats up with all the signs? are they necessary? also, i tested that in SP i can place the sigh in the air like you have it on your map (biofactory 3), but it doesnt work in MP, at least not at the servers where i tried it.
What does the signs do, do they allow mobs to spawn on them and fall right away?
Thanks

Let me just say that building this design is EXTREMELY time consuming on a fully legitimate server. We are almost done and have used entire continents supply of wood. For the love of god, why can't signs stack!
Let's think about what might be done with the next updates:
1.5: Ice can be created once again by placing snow next to water.
1.6: Pistons!
I liked the idea of having ice-floored canals to collect items more quickly, but that's really only relevant to the full scale traps. For smaller, practical ones, The items usually flow straight from the killing floor to the connecting point with no secondary canals, so I don't think this will actually be useful.
Pistons might be very useful, but it's speculative since they might be changed from how they work in the mod now. First, they can be used to create fully bright automatic lighting by uncovering torches. This will make it possible to fully shut off the trap, which will be nice for dealing with the lag associated with them.
They also might be used to help kill monsters, but I doubt they will be useful in this respect. Using them to push monsters off ledges or to open trap floors would require a lot of pistons and circuitry, which would be more work then placing signs.
Pistons might also be used as an item collector since they can shove them around quickly, but as I established with the ice, small traps don't really need that.
Anyway I'm excited about the prospect of being able to turn the traps off. Any more consequences I might have missed?

Like this:
It's four cobblestones so that spiders will spawn AND fall.
It can even get as small as this:
[] []
[] []
but that can be multiplied, and can be arranged in a pattern like reeds.

It's supposed to be in all directions. Not only horizontally or vertically, but all 360 degree directions. Also called a sphere.

In crass-section:
[] [] []
[] [] [] (Spawning area)
[] [] []
[] [] []
[] [] []
[] [] [] (Fall area)
[] [] []
[] [] []
Or is there some reason this wouldn't work?

Edit: nvm, found it out. Turns out you just place signs on top of the signs that are against the wall.

Is this more efficient than this one (not just in drops vs space, but sign usage)? viewtopic.php?f=1020&t=225793&p=3444716#p3444716
What about this one?

The first is the Biofactory SMP edition with spiders, the second one is SMP edition with no spiders.
You mentioned you were trying to make it more feasible to build, so I thought maybe you had stats.
Dang, and I thought 400 signs for my tiny trap was bad.
