So I was mining for obsidian so I could go to the Nether, because I needed some Glowstone. I was on Level 11, the lava level. I had just created some obsidian. I was about to mine the obsidian with my diamond pick, but I accidentally mined the stone directly under me, which had lava underneath. I tried to change to creative, but I didn't type it right and I ended up dying. >.> I lost a diamond pick, diamond sword, 2 diamonds, iron armor (with 2 extra chestplates), a bunch of cobblestone, 5 obsidian, some potatoes, some wood, a hell of a lot of redstone, some gold ore, and some iron ore.
Next time, remind me to bring some chests so I can put away my items immediately. -.-
I did make a backup of the world, but that was before I got my diamonds. I could just get the items back in Creative, but that's cheating...
But...switching to creative would have been cheating also. Why do that and not spawn in diamonds? What is the difference?

I always dig straight down too, yep that's right I dig with recklessness, the same way I brush teeth which is why there are little white toothpaste spots all over my mirror. But seriously dig straight down to 12, shaft mining is the best and is a temple of bravery.
It's happened to me. Best way to avoid losing everything is to mine out a block anywhere next to you In any direction, try and jump out before you burn up and run as far away from the lava as you can so that when you do die it all doesn't go flying into the lava.
Always carry a bucket of water with you while mining near lava, It can save your life. (And it's not cheating either)
Why are you so angry about losing your items with cheats on anyways? It's kind of silly to say you can use creative to get out of a lava situation, but as soon as you die and lose your stuff you say "nope decided I can't use it now"
