I've always dragged my feet about building a house in survival, because I have no idea what to put in it that will both look nice and have an actual use. Because while having a 'bathroom' is kinda cool, it doesn't serve any purpose.
So here's the start of my list of USEFUL things to have in your house/base. Help me get to 101!
1) Bed (resetting spawn point)
2) Storage room
3) Disposal unit (lava, cactus, etc, for getting rid of unwanted junk)
4) Enchanting room
5) Brewing room
6) Nether portal
7) Small wheat 'herb garden'
8) Trophy room (for the dragon egg, various ore blocks, and maybe a cake ^^)
9) Mob trap dungeon
10) Passive mob zoo
Added by the community:
11) Automatic farms for everything! Wheat, Sugar cane, Cactus, Trees, Melons and pumpkins, etc.
12) A look-out tower to snipe baddies.
13) Smelting/cooking area
14) Jukebox room to relax or if you want some creativity at home.
15) Infinite water source room? You could squish it in another room however.
16) Library. Include an enchanting area and have a chest (or multiple) to organize books you might write or maps you've made.
17) multipe rooms for diffrent animal farms
18) Self destruct button
19) hidden treasure room

Yup. This is exactly how I feel 80% of the time. Recently I've decided the next place I call home will be an organized hole underground or a cube of obsidian on the surface. However, thinking of things that actually serve a purpose:
12. A look-out tower to snipe baddies.
13. Smelting/cooking area (surprised this isn't up there :P).
14. Jukebox room to relax or if you want some creativity at home.

16. Library. Include an enchanting area and have a chest (or multiple) to organize books you might write or maps you've made.
#20 a full back up bomb shelter base with tons of food (wheat, bread, steak ect.) with tools torches and everything you need in case some creeper apcalspe
34: A bell or alarm system. When enemies enter your property, you can be notified with flashing lights from your redstone torches or a sound from your note blocks.
35: A dock for your boats or to go fishing at.
36: Transportation system if you're planning to expand and you need to get to places quickly. This can be done with railroad tracks and minecarts.
37: Arrow dispensers. Just as a form of defense against your enemies.
39: A "Break in case of Emergency" chest containing a Map, Tools, a crafting table, wood, sticks, Water, Food, Potions, and a Compass.
40: An Armor Storage room containing many suits of Armor.
41: A Kitchen.
42 (Meaning of Life, Universe, Everything): A Shooting Range [If you're sloppy with the Bow].
43: A Panic Room in the event of an Enderman attack.
44: A Demolition testing Room.
45: An obstacle course for brushing up on skills if you've been away from Minecraft for a while.

Well, you wouldn't add all 101, silly. It'd just be nice to have a list of 101 things you COULD add.

For now, those are my additions.

kitchen? Smelting room?Sounds more manly then kitchen. In your smelting room you should have a
fridge food stooge unit.How:
Needed stuff:
15 Ingots of iron. (One door, and one block)
one dispenser
Design:
= dispenser
= Iron door
= Iron block
It's two blocks tall. Stick a bunch of food in the dispenser. Cover it with a furnace/crafting table and put a button on the iron block.
