Get everything back within an hour.
When you were digging straight down, did you at any time hear this popping noise that sounded like thousands of creepers marching over your (stone-brick) grave? if you say you didn't, then shame on you.
So, this happened to me today, and I'm not mad because it was my own stupidity and I disobeyed the first rule of minecraft. I was digging a 1x1 tunnel down so that mobs would fall for a trap, but I forgot you aren't supposed to dig straight down. Please don't berate me; I have already payed the price.
I can't remember everything I had in my inventory, but none of it was game-changing, so it will just be a slight setback. So I just sighed and moved on.
So, let's imagine you just died in lava with everything you currently have in your inventory. What do you do?
I would get so pissed off. I have a Enchanted Pick with Efficiency IV, Unbreaking III, and Silk Touch that I carry around at all times to conserve space in my inventory when I mine Redstone and Lapis. I also have a Diamond Sword with Fire Aspect II, Looting III, and Sharpness IV. I also have Diamond Armor, but they all have crappy level one enchantments so I would not care if those burned.

One time I was down in a cave where there were about three pools of lava and about 5 different branches leading off to different areas. I was carefully skirting of cliff next to one of lava pools when i get shot by a skeleton and landed in the pool of lava. As I burned, i thought, "seriously minecraft..." but then I had the presense of mind to whip out my water bucket and save myself before i died. I lived to mine another day actually and all my mined blocks made it safely into my chests at home. This was a learned behavior mind. Before I learned to carry a water bucket with with I would rage quit and start a new world.
Option #4: Hack the stuff back in.
I'm a big cheater at times...and I'm always scared of dying so I back up my inventory whenever I get something I think precious, even if it's Coal.
Right now? I'd be okay. I just have some wheat from my wheat farm, eggs from my chicken farm and some leather from nearby cows.
I hate how every time I make diamond tools I seem destined to loose them by being pushed into lava one way or another. Most recently( a few days ago) I was battling silver fish and some how got pushed into the lava near by. I was even being careful! Diamond tools are bad luck for me. Hopefully it goes better in the nether right? =D
This has happened to me three times, but I've never lost very valuable items. The only annoying thing was that one time I lost my first original map and had to make another one. Just shrug it off and take a break from playing computer games.
I just went mining with 3 Diamond pickaxes and they had
Efficiency IV Unbreaking III and Silktouch I
Efficiency IV Unbreaking III and Fortune II
Efficiency III and Unbreaking II
Also had a diamond shovel some random stuff and a pair of Feather Falling I gold boots also I had a cobblestone generator and an obsidian generator in the world, also almost a stack of diamonds...and I died... D:<
I either:
A) Take a ragebreak and go sit alone in the dark for a while,
or Instantly respawn and give myself a "Digian Wrath" potion with TMI and kill everything in sight.
Rage quit. Delete world, delete Minecraft, bash keyboard until it breaks, throw keyboard through monitor because it doesn't work, then throw monitor out window because it now doesn't work. Wait one week then go by a new Keyboard and monitor.
Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.

If I got nothing valuable, I'll just respawn and keep going
Efficiency IV Unbreaking III and Silktouch I
Efficiency IV Unbreaking III and Fortune II
Efficiency III and Unbreaking II

Also, to prepare for this sort of thing, I don't bring too many items when spelunking and keep all of my worn stone/iron tools for use when I die.

True Story.
