I made a simple temporary brreding pen, with 12 doors (and corresponding roof blocks), two nitwits breeding (so that trading isn't a concern or even possible), I feed them manually, and I remove the babies well outside double the possible village radius away.
This worked great at first. After a couple days it slowed down and eventually stopped breeding. one of the villagers gets no hearts no matter how much I feed it.
What gives? Am I missing some critical mechanic? How do I fix it?
Edit: BTW, the villagers that got moved out of the "village" really are
out of the village. At one point I had enough villagers (and doors) that the village was spawning iron golems. That fully stopped when I moved the extra villagers away.
maybe it is because the villagers are not throwing food at each other. or it could be that the villager action reputation is low, or that a mob killed a villager, or that a zombie is being a tedious brat and scared all the villagers.
- I gave them more food. Besides that, how could I make them throw food at each other?
- I have not hit a single villager. Also, any golem deaths were by sand suffocation, which is independent from reputation. How can I check the reputation level?
- There are no hidden zombies inside 2x the village radius. Only at the zombie grinder (was already there when they bred fine) and those die quickly. There aren't any hidden zombies, I am playing skyblock, the platform is flat and I can see everywhere.
Besides, one of the villagers is showing hearts, just not both. If the issue was any of those, wouldn't they both be behaving equally uninterested?
Any other possibilities? There must be a mechanic that explains it.
That is a thought. Will try with a priest that I traded plenty with and should be "very happy". I really wish I had a farmer. Breeding farmers is why I did this initial temporary breeding setup.
But I would still like to figure out what mechanic is interfering with my nitwit breeding so that I can avoid it. I would hate to put 3 farmers into my "setup and forget" permanent breeder and then discover that after a while it stops breeding.
@VirtualFreddy: Yes, there is tons of light. No, no mods. I did nitwits for the initial breeding because the can get happy via food, and trading does not exist for them. My real breeder will have a 3x3 with carrots, 3 farmers to breed and a way to carry the babies away out of the "village". But after a dozen or so villagers I still have no farmers.
Also, keep in mind that these nitwits worked perfectly at first. What really troubles me is that it *stopped* breeding after doing it successfully for a while. What if this happen too far in the real breeder? It would defeat the whole purpose of doing all this work to setup a perm breeder.

All good thoughts.

perhaps you try returning one of the villagers, a farmer perhaps
is there enough lighting?
are you using any mods?
are you sure that nitwits are the best idea???

Strangest thing, before I was able to try (after a couple days) the nitwits started breeding again on their own.
