So I was fixing up and remodeling a village I found close to my base, and the population got high enough to spawn an iron golem. But I still don't have any farming villagers, so to get them to breed I have to throw food at them by hand. So I was walking around tossing out carrots and potatoes near villagers when the iron golem came up and smashed me dead on the spot! I hadn't done anything aggressive or violent toward the golem or any villagers, so I figured maybe I just hit him accidentally. So I went back to the village to collect my dropped items and the minute I walked into range the golem killed me again! This time I hadn't done anything at all except walk into the village.
When I went back again the golem started chasing me right away. Finally I had to pillar up a little ways off so he couldn't reach me and kill him with bow and arrows just so I could get my items off the ground. I thought dying would break agro from a golem.
When a new golem spawned he was no longer agro to me, and he was OK with me throwing food at the villagers. It was the strangest golem "bug" I ever saw.
I'm not sure but an Iron Golem will only continuously attack if the village rating is -15 or worse. If he's been aggroed by you hitting a villager or himself, I thought the aggro is reset after a certain time period; maybe you went back to early before. I'm guessing you somehow accidentally hit a villager or the golem. Been flying any arrows about at mobs that might have missed and hit a villager without you knowing?

After reading the guide I think I know what happened. While I was monster-proofing the village I left a lot of useless villagers outside the protection walls and then just killed them off. I thought the kill-a-villager effect only lasted 3 minutes so I wasn't worried. I didn't know about reputation, so I guess I ruined my reputation. I'll need to do a bunch of trading with them I guess.
How did I play the game this long and not know about reputation? haha. You learn something every day.
If you kill them humanely (pillar sand on them for example) then you just get villagers depressed for three minutes, but don't lose reputation.
I suppose best is to 'deport' them - bump them into a water channel that carries them many blocks away, where they get dumped into the ocean or into a village of zombie bait.

Anybody else ever run into that problem?

Think Iron Magus updated his guide recently; try section 4 here http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-java-edition/survival-mode/295987-village-mechanics-a-not-so-brief-guide
