I agree that sponge shouldn't be removed, but I disagree with part of your post. Sponge isn't just for decoration, have you ever tried putting sponge in water? You can make cool underwater places with sponge!

For people who hate texture of the gravel, they are changing it in 1.3.

On topic: Most likely diamond armor, it is too over powered. In SMP diamond armor is over powered because one person can defeat 4 iron armor people.

Are game mechanics allowed? I would remove void fog, it's annoying. If not, I would remove sponges. No use but for greifing.

Silverfish. All they do is cause annoyance and they don't have any drops at all.
