With all the biome threads I've been reading recently I've got to thinking about what biomes players "need". When I say need, I mean in terms of resources, as that's why most players like biome variety. This is an attempt at creating a list of the minimal biomes to get maximum resources. The format is the biome, followed by unique items found in that biome. [each item only appearing once in the unique items]
Swampland is also the only place to get those light blue flowers, and can get clay and sugarcane as well, so rivers are not really needed if you've got swamps.
Mushroom islands are also the only place to get Mycelium, although once you've got one block, you can make more.
Mega Taiga is also a good place to get Mossy Cobble and wolves, and Jungle also needs ocelots/cats on the list.
Don't forget the non-overworld biomes, as Hell (Nether) is the only place to get Netherrack, Netherbrick, Glowstone, Soul Sand, Netherwart, Blaze Rods, and Magma blocks. And the End is the only place to get Endstone, Chorus Fruit (and derivative Purpur Blocks), Elytra, and Dragon Heads.

Yup. I usually look for swamps for the blue orchids to make light blue dye.

I didn't think of any of those.

I was planning on leaving the Nether and End out because of their lack of biome variation, and because they're separate dimensions a player knows they should go to. But I may as well add them in.
And swamps also have witch huts.
I wasn't planning on putting in generated structures, because of how they can spawn in almost any biome. The biome-specific ones should do, though.

Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.

If you have anything to add or change, let me know and I'll update the list.

Forest and Jungle is all I need!
Witch huts have potions in their cauldron! It's very useful early on in the game. Mines had two potions of swiftness.

Witch huts can't have potions in their cauldrons. Potions can't go inside cauldrons on the Java version, which is what this thread is of.
