As most Minecraft veterans like me would probably know, it is possible to jump across a 4-block gap horizontally when sprinting.
This begs the question, with certain potion effects, is it possible to increase how far you can jump horizontally? As such, I experimented on this by jumping off of ice while having the Speed II potion effect on. Both ice and Speed II slightly increase the horizontal distance of each jump, however I still found that I wasn't able to make the 5-block gap.
Here's my question that goes out to the community: Is it possible to jump across a 5-block gap using any of the potion effects / features available in vanilla Minecraft? I doubt so, but I don't have a firm answer yet. (By potion effects, it encompasses anything like Speed II, Jump Boost II from max level beacons, or anything that has an effect on movement.)
And here's the second question: What potion effects at what levels are required to successfully jump across a 5-block gap? (And this can include levels that aren't available in vanilla Minecraft, such as Speed III or IV or Jump Boost III or IV.)
To the point. It's my folly for failing to mention that the two platforms must be level. :/
(sorry for being a smart-ass in my previous post)
To answer your question with a much more thoughtful answer, I would have to say it would be a very close call to make it to the end of the fourth block during a jump from a sprint after using a potion of swiftness II, and the jump boost effect from a beacon. It may be possible, but it would require the user to be very skilled in timing to ensure that one would jump from the last possible moment of a block to make the jump.

Speed 2 beacon,
speed 2 potion
Ice runway
works for me
Indeed, with Speed II, Jump Boost II and Ice, it is possible to cross 5-block gaps in vanilla survival. Just tested and confirmed. Cheers guys!
With this set-up, I find myself being able to cross 5 blocks without a problem, but I am very barely unable to hit six. With some precision it might be possible, but very narrowly.
I actually thought that the jump boost wouldn't help because it gives you height over distance when jumping, but it looks like the distance boost that the ice gives you more than compensates for that.
And if you got 100 blocks up, you can jump over 10 block gaps!
Up to the height limit, you can probably jump across 30 block gaps, though you'd get yourself killed without a hacked Feather Falling enchantment. And you'd probably need level VII or VIII to survive that sort of height :/

I'm definitely going to look into that. Jumping with Punch II bows is something that should be implemented into parkour maps in my humble opinion.
Wow. That's awesome. How easy/hard is it to get Punch II, again?

Not very easy to get. With a level 30 enchant, you only have a 17% chance of getting Punch II on a bow. The chance is even lower if you use enchantment books.

Looks like Speed II + Jump Boost II + Ice still can't hit 6. Without using Punch bows, looks like 5 might be the max for vanilla, unless there's some method that I've not heard of.

Unless Mojang decides to add a 'Swift III' or a 'Jump-boost III' I think that's as good as it's going to get for now.

Minecraft [Alpha] 1.7.3 had blocks that you can use to build with.
Minecraft now has blocks that you can use to build with.
Nothing has changed in my opinion." That is all.

Wow that's pretty crazy. I hadn't thought about it working like that.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

I'm glad I could help you two out :).

This pleases me more than it should.
I was going to say that...
Aww, that's ok. Since you're new (as visible from post count) you'll get a free rep once my quota expires.
Of course, you could just get 2 Punch I bows and then use an anvil....
