Well, today has been a great day for diamond finding for me. I just started branch mining, and found a few. Then I found a cave, and looked around the lower areas, and found a ton. Ending up getting about 51 diamonds. Thanks to my Eff IV, Unbreaking III, and Fortune III Diamond Pickaxe. Which I named Mr. Miner so I could repair it indefinitely.
I have used a 2 x 2 mining shaft down about, 50 blocks. I got 12 diamonds, turns out i was just lucky, 'cause I could not find any more for at least 3 days.
I take 2 - 4 potions of night vision and fire resistance, dive into a deep ravine, and run around at low levels until I find diamond, then use a Fortune pickaxe on them (or Silk Touch if I don't have fortune- if I don't have either, I wait until I have one of those before doing this). It's worked suprisingly well for me. I especially look for very large lava lakes since that covers a lot of area.
For my first cave, however, I just use torches to mark my path instead of running around with night vision and swimming circles in lava.

Now that I think about it, night vision does sound pretty useful, haha.
I start a Branch Mine at level 12 (eye level) and just dig straight until my inventory is full with my Efficiency IV Unbreaking III Fortune III pickaxe :).
Dig straight down till layer 12 (like a noob), place ladders all the way up, then make a 10x10 room with a bunch of Furnaces, 4 Chests and a Crafting Table, and just start Branching.
As soon as I get to 64 of an Ore, I place 8 Coal in the Furnace and come back to get the XP.
Torches every 8 to 10 blocks, works great to prevent spawning monsters, and also gets you very much XP.
For some reason I have a much harder time finding gold than diamonds. I am building a lot of complicated rail systems so I need a lot of powered rails which means gold, so maybe it just appears that way. I made a diamond suit for myself and a diamond sword, and then pretty much never did much with diamond.

Same. I do believe I have a little bit more gold, but gold seems to never appear for me. It's a bit annoying, because I want at least 1 stack of blocks for all ores. Including diamonds.
I have an array of turtles that I set to mine tunnels 100 blocks long. I repeat this until I have a very large hole from y: 5 to y:16-ish, completely stripped of it's resurces.
As starting out, I would recommend a more of a Caving approach. This is the best, as the time spent trying to set up a branch mine to the actual time it takes to find diamonds when you are just starting out is quite challenging. When caving, try to skip over most of the top layers (30 +) and try to hit an Abandoned Mineshaft. In addition to being the right height, the chests in here have a chance for Diamonds, and for other useful materials to start out (seeds, iron, food, etc.)
Now if you are an established player, the opposite is true. Go for the Strip Mining as this will be well worth your time especially if you have an Efficiency V , Unbreaking III, and Fortune III.
Anyway, best of luck to your future Mining Endeavors! May the Diamonds always be in your Inventory.

Haha good tips. And I'll do my best to keep that statement true

Thus I cave mine.
