I'm at 2260/-7700 in the End after raiding a crap ton of End Cities, with only 17 1 duration firework rockets (but plenty of Elytra durability.) How frequent are the random outer End gateways that can take me back to the center island?
Right now, I'm thinking I'll fly as far towards the center as possible and then search for either the post-dragon return gateway or a randomly generated gateway (I've only killed the dragon once, so I only have one post-dragon return gateway.) Any other ideas?
I seem to find them pretty easily. Increase your FOV and look for a purple beacon beam. The return gateways emit a purple beacon beam for a few seconds when the chunk they're in is loaded (I mark them with torches when I find them to make them easier to find later).
Another option, if you have an Ender Chest (which are relatively common in end cities), is to put all your stuff into an ender chest and jump into the void. You will lose your XP levels, but all your valuables will be waiting for you in the overworld. If you have too many items for an ender chest, craft some shulker boxes and put your stuff in them, then put the shulker boxes into the ender chest.
In short, put all of your valuables into an ender chest and die, respawning wherever you last slept.
This is why I always travel with an ender chest and a silk touch pick axe. If I've traveled long and far to raid a woodland mansion of end city and there's some chance I'll die, I just prepare for it by putting everything in the ender chest.
You might not have traveled with an ender chest but they spawn in end cities. So do normal chests and obviously shulker shells. So you can make a bunch of shulker boxes to put all your loot in in that ender chest.
You will need a creating table for this. If you don't travel with a crafting table or some wood (which I also recommend) then I'm sorry, this post will not help you. You can still put stuff in the ender chest but you won't have nearly as many slots as you would if you could construct the shulker boxes or if you already have them.
The one downside to this is that you lose your levels. Hopefully that's not a big deal to you. If you have enough stuff on you too make an anvil or enchanting table, you could always spend those levels before you die.
Furthermore, if you happen to have sticky pistons, Redstone, and some blocks you could build a plane and afk yourself back to near the origin on the end. Hit me up for details if you have that. It's how I travel in the end a lot.
I realize this thread is old, but I just wanted to mention that seventeen rockets (even flight-duration 1 rockets) is plenty enough to boost yourself up several hundred blocks into the air, and then you can glide for MILES if you keep relatively horizontal the whole time.
EDIT: I just tested this and yes, it's possible. I teleported to 2300, -7700 in the end, gave myself seventeen fireworks (well, crafted 18 and threw one away, since you can't actually get rockets from the creative inventory), and switched into survival mode. Boosting upwards (diagonally, not straight up) those seventeen rockets got me to over y=1300, and I was still at almost y=600 by the time I reached the main island at 0,0.
You might be interested in knowing about this command: "/give @a fireworks 17" It's very handy.
Yeah I never could really get the hang of commands. Anything much beyond "/tp [x] [y] [z]" and I just get confused. It's a bit better now that you can use names of things instead of having to memorize what number everything was, but I still get tripped up trying to remember how it all fits together. Had a hell of a time trying to summon a "farmer" villager, once. (Well, more than once. Even when i did figure it out, I couldn't remember it for the next time.)
I'm more of a survival player, so really I only use commands when testing something out. They're not part of my "everyday Minecraft" skill set...
