Depends how I feel. I often go caving, but that and branch mining can go hand in hand when one turns into the other. I've made a quarry once. I only use TNT if I don't care about resources and just need to clear things out.

Don't like the terrain? Go build your own. You can totally do that in this game.
I've been messing around in Hardcore lately and I'm working out a great system! I build my rooms all underground so I find a lot of ore that way, and I've also got a shaft going down to level 12 where I branch mine in nine different directions. Tall tunnels though, I don't want to miss anything hiding high up!
And you can too dig straight down safely! Shift = cling to ladder, it takes longer to mine while you're on a ladder but that's better than getting lava'd or falling into a pit!

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
Iusually mine a 3X3 path and take w/e ore I find along the way, but if I find a ton of diamond I quarry it, and it usually yields 20+ diamonds, I've never not found more when I do it this way.
3x3 hole straight down with ladders placed along thw wall. Occasioanly a chest is seen along with a workbench to remove cobble in my inventory. I do this until I hit bedrock. i ignore all caves, and snag all ores there. I seal off the top so I dont get mobs falling on me when it's shallow. Once bedrock's hit, I explore any caves I uncovered. If none, peminantly seal it off.
My avatar-Madison Gotha. She knows various weapons, she's a mage/sage, and is somewhat immortal. Madison has the capability of taming and communicating monsters, a genetic trait passed down by her father. 26 physically, 1400-something mentally, and a Lofty Peakian/Zenithian mix. Doesn't really like being called an elf and hates being called human..

With how plentiful caves are now, it really doesn't pay to for me to bore myself to death by branch mining.
I do like to make the caves into nice and neat corridors and rooms as I mine through them. Not only does it make it easy to tell where I've been already, but it gives me plenty of cobblestone to craft with.
The only time I branch mine anymore is when I haven't gotten lucky with diamonds for a bit.
I voted branch mining, since that is what I do when I seriously mine for diamonds, emeralds and other valuable resources. That said, I'm also a spelunker and usually remove valuables once a stretch of natural cavern or tunnel has been secure. In this case I generally fill the holes I make with cobble (or rarely dirt) so that the passages retain something of their original shape. I dislike strip mining since afterward one is left with utterly bland squarish chambers.
For me, it changes based on how far I have progressed in my map. Generally at the beginning of the game, I will wander around exploring surface caves until I find a nice place to set my permanent base. After that, I will create a branch mine linked to my house and create rails if I have enough iron, or just walk around. That way, I won't lose my house (it's happened so many times), hehe.

What I do is: Grab the ores, kill the zombies, grab more ores, kill more zombies, leave at a good amount, and kill more zombies.
I said this. Two days later, my computer's motherboard melted down and I had to get a new one with Windows 8.
Irony in the first degree.

So, I guess I will select "Other".
