That's not true. They won't attack creepers, that much is true, but they will attack almost everything else. The wiki says they attack all neutral and hostile mobs except creepers, slimes, ghasts, magma cubes, and wolves. But I did some testing just now in creative and I seen 'em attacking slimes, and even ghasts sometimes although that's not very reliable. If I spawned the ghast right next to the golem, so that he was inside of it when it spawned, he'd hit it right away. But they didn't seem to go after other ghasts, even one that I trapped on the ground and build several golems nearby. Just a few minutes ago I watched an iron golem attack all of the following:
Spider
Enderman
Zombie Pigman
Slime - Large
Slime - Medium
Slime - Small
Silverfish
Blaze
Witch
And as I said, sometimes ghasts, but not reliably. I didn't see him attack any magma cubes or hostile wolves, and I didn't spawn in any cave spiders or wither skeletons but I imagine they would attack those as well. We already know they don't attack creepers, and they do attack zombies and skeletons.
Omg I just got attacked from a creeper but I thought the iron golems were going to proctect me! I wanna know why it did not protect me. I think this a waste of iron and pumpkins!
I would say yes if you find a lot of iron while you are mining one day, but, don't waste ALL your time building an iron golem or at least collecting all the resources, if one day you come across a pumpkin, take it, if one day you find a lot of iron, well you can save up to get one. So I wouldn't recommend wasting all your time on it because you should probably be focusing on some other useful things.
(I know this is 4 years late but whatever :creeperdance:)
5 years late, but I'm gonna put this here for any weary traveler: My current in game house is the woodland manor, which is a place that I cannot light well enough without it looking ugly. I tried using Snow Golems on each floor, but they died easily, even in large packs of 7. Instead, I have 5 Iron Golems on each floor that walk around and pick stuff off. The only problems I have are the occasional Creepers, and even a rarer Invokers that are more bulky. I've played the game for about 150 in game days, and only have three Golems die on me. Keeping your Golems in your enclosed house is really helpful. The smaller your house, the less Golems you need, the bigger the more. I'd say one Golem per 40 blocks just to be safe.
The other thing I do is dig 5x5 holes into the ground until one of them reaches bedrock. Then I proceed to tunnel in every direction in 3x3 tunnels at bedrock level so I can mine diamonds efficiently (I use cobble picks to mine, that yield far more cobble than it takes per pick so I don't operate at a loss). I usually put a bunch down in my tunnels so I don't have to dump all of my coal into torches (yah boy's a heavy smelter). This mining method is also an opportune to use Iron Golems, and can yield you iron efficiently so that you're not operating your Golems at a heavy loss.

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

Would it help if I fence them in and make leads to restrict them to one location?
I also plan to make posts around the house with snow golems if these are a no-go.
I am the single least important person in the universe, and exist only to entertain my friends and drink Dr. Pepper.
I would never rely on golems for protection when good lighting and a simple fence, wall, or moat would be much more reliable.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
