Lots of people have trouble with hostile mobs attacking them when they want to do some extra work at night, or chop down some wood for the next day, so here are some of my tips for you.
This is my house. Yes, I know I use some mods like Rei's Minimap, and Herblore, but nothing that interferes with mobs. Notice how well lit the area is and how there are almost no dark spots. I have changed one part in this picture and it will be shown in the other pictures. The top left area where my smaller farm is, is a little dark and has been the only spot where mobs spawn. I have fixed that to make it a little brighter.
Notice how this tree (top) is brighter than the other tree (bottom). This neat trick is very handy if you like to have trees around your house.
The secret? Glowstone. This trick is well known and you probably know it already. But if you don't, I will show you why it is so useful and how to set it up.
You are going to need to go to the Nether and get some glowstone dust, and then turn it into glowstone of course. You are also going to need shears, and shear the leaves in the spot where you want to put your glowstone. So here are the steps. Jump on top of your tree and shear one block of leaves in the middle of the top of your tree. Then, either shear one more deep or if there's a log there, chop at it ( If you use the timber mod like I do, punch it, just in case so the whole tree won't fall ). Now you can put your glowstone down and than the block of leaves on top of it. This is very useful because it stops hostile mobs from spawning on your trees than jumping down and killing you, makes your tree look cool at night, and provides light for you to see at night.
Like I said before, I use the Herblore mod, so don't bug me about it in the comments. And like I also said, I have added some new features to this area because mobs were spawning here, like torches on the side of the dirt wall, and glowstone on both sides of the farmed area. Creepers will not spawn on half blocks by the way. I don't think any other hostile mobs will but don't take my word for it. All around the area I have my farm set up and house set up, there are fences so mobs cannot get in. I also have torches on the fences every 5 blocks to provide light which is very important. Even if you think an area won't allow mobs to spawn, don't trust your gut. Because most of the time, mobs will spawn there. I don't like just placing torches all over the ground in random places like some people do. I want to keep as much security around my house as possible, but I also want to keep it neat, compact, and nice.
Here is another example of lighting. I don't just throw random torches around. I place things like fences so I can put torches on them and keep it neat, or trees so I can do the glowstone trick.
As you might of seen in the last picture, I had some jack o' lanterns placed. And again, instead of throwing torches around on the ground, I keep it neat. This area was dark and I wasn't trusting my gut about whether or not mobs would spawn there so I made some jack o' lanterns and put the around my trees like how pumpkins spawn to add some different blocks, give it some color, add light, but also keep it neat.
After a long day of slaying monsters, tending to your crops, and chopping down trees ( which I will talk about later ), you are going to want to sit back and relax and take a dip in your natural lake, or go on a boat ride. Now if you built your house by a large body of water, and you want to secure some of that water inside your fence line this is what you do. You simply put some cobblestone right through the area you want to keep, and the put some fences on top of that cobblestone, along with some torches, and 2 wooden doors so you can leave on a boat ride whenever you want. I just looked it up online and I don't think hostile mobs will spawn in water. But I'm not positive. After I am done with this post, I am going to add some glowstone underwater just in case.
I know your probably getting sick of it, but here's another example of lighting. This is the most important part of Minecraft. Not getting killed at night by zombies and creepers exploding while your dreaming about sheep jumping over fences. This isn't the bedroom, but this is in my house, and I want to keep every square block ( Ha ha that was a good one ) lit well.
Back to the overview of my house. Notice how wonderful it is? And it was all done legit. The only thing different I have done that isn't exactly legit was using lapiz lazuli or however you spell it as money and selling and buying stuff with Too Many Items. It makes the game more fun and easy, and instead of going down into caves to look for coal while getting shot by skeletons, I just buy it with Too Many Items. But anyways back to the point I wanted to make. Do you see the trees that are not lit inside my secured area? That is my tree farm. ( And you can imagine much cash I get by cutting down trees with the Timber mod. I suggest building a tree farm , because you can never have enough wood, and trees also drop apples which you should know, so you will have a steady supply of food. ) There is a very big problem that I made when I made this tree farm. I made it was too close to my house, and I can't light up the area on top of my trees. Ouch. Big problem. I have put a fence line to block off my tree farm from the rest of the secured area, but mobs can still spawn on top of the trees and jump over the fence. I lit that area as much as possible but it's still an endangerment to me. But I'm not going to be a HUGE wuss about it. But I still want to feel safe around my place ( rhyme time! ). They will probably fall right into the lava pit right next to the tree farm anyways. And that's another thing I wanted to mention. The seed I have found is amazing. It was a random seed and it gives you a lava pit, right next to a huge ravine, a fairly big cave system, but not too big so your falling in holes, and another huge cave system that is right next to the ravine with a waterfall in it. I will list the coordinates of the area and the seed at the bottom. Some of you may notice that I haven't lit up the roof on my buildings and I will do that after this post too.
Thank you for sitting through this discussion, it was my first major one, I hope it will help you out in Minecraft. Another thing is, can someone suggest a good camera program that is free that will allow me to post videos of Minecraft and such? It would be a major help. Please send the link to the website if you can too. Thank you. And here's the coordinates and seed.
It is your complete right to make this post. 2 times +1 for you !
I fell on this post on coincidence but it has some really nice tips and tricks in it
I love this. Nice stuff ^^ beatifull hous by the way. I always placed torch torch torch. why did i never think of pumpkins ... ?
i hate the nether btw. never go there. always die. even in peacefull T.T
Thank you, and I find myself on peaceful a lot too, even in the overworld. I'm a wuss lol. And if you like my house, I haven't finished it, but if you want to copy the design, you should put wooden stairs as shingles on the roof and overhangs to give it more of a detailed and realistic look. But adding shingles costs a lot of wood,
