I guess this is kind-of a beginner mistake, but I had downloaded some mods. One of these was the portal gun mod. So I finally get enough materials to craft it and I start playing with it, seeing my character through walls and falling infinitely (I also had the long fall boots). So I venture outside and shoot a portal on the ground and, remembering the ending of Portal 2, I shoot a portal at the moon. I get sucked into the portal on the ground and instantly die, losing everything.
So yeah, a beginner to mods mistake, one that I will never repeat.

I remember I had tried breaking blocks by furiously clicking the left mouse button. I then realized I had to HOLD the mouse. LOL and then after I made a little dirt shack, I dropped everything off into a chest, including my wooden tool set. I ran into a cave, where a zombie came to greet me... I didn't know how to attack, so I just stood there dumbfounded, wondering what was hitting me. And then of COURSE I die and then I think, "... how do you attack mobs?" LOL So I stood there like an idiot, waiting for night, and then I hit the mobs with my fist. And a SPIDER JOCKEY comes along and... I get pwned. Spawned beside my house, barely made it to my house in time to see... a creeper. and kabloomy! ._______.''

Mine has to be falling victim to the dreaded "Why can't I chop this tree?" syndrome and waiting far too long before googling the answer. In consequence I was ill prepared to survive my first night in Minecraftia.
Not lighting my base. I had no idea that mobs spawned in dark areas, and because my base was deep underground (near bedrock) and a huge dugout cave, I expected to find mobs galore at night (only thought they spawned at night) and yet none spawned. That was because I stayed at my base at night and there were no areas for them to spawn that were far enough away. I started digging a tunnel (without torches still) and about 50 blocks later, went back...creepers everywhere. ****. Then my friend told me I needed to light the base. Derp.
Well... First time I played MC (ages ago), I couldn't break any blocks because I was just spamming the mouse button. After I learned that you had to hold the mouse. So I came up to my first zombie. I tried to kill it my holding the mouse button down. (It didn't work)
well when i got the game i instantly started..... didnt know anything at all and was excited to play... i got the basics and went to look for coal under a mountain with a cave opening to the ocean.... shadows where there and saw my first mob.... a skeleton.... ran up with all of my items and gave it a hug.... ._. it didnt like me and killed me in 3 hits losing my items under water never to be seen again
Not figuring out how to craft tools and clearing a entire beach (and several large hills) out with my fist and then building my entire base out of dirt.

"Why won't this block give me coal? I'm breaking it with my fist?"
And
"Why did the Creator of this game make it so hard to break blocks? My clicking doesn't work!"
i used to think iron was rare ...and every time i got diamonds i would fall in lava
Yeah I used to fall into lava a lot. And off of things because I didn't know about the shift key. and way back when mobs would spawn inside if the outside wasn't lit up too I didn't light up the outside. Also putting a fireplace in a wood house.
You see, my first world in MineCraft (more than a year ago) things were going just swell. I had finally finished my large wooden castle on top of a hill, a huge farm, everything a new MineCrafter could ever want. Then, one fateful moment, I thought "Hey, wouldn't lava look cool on the side of my house?" Idiotically, I poured lava down my castle, and watched it burn down... After that I rage quit and didn't play for nearly 3 days...
Didnt find Iron till about 3 months of gameplay. Made a wooden house on top of a floating island I found and made a fire place. And I Didnt know how to make a wooden pickaxe. thought it was logs not planks. Also had the same problem where i kept clicking
So yeah, a beginner to mods mistake, one that I will never repeat.
