I think this has been pretty much closed up, but here's my two cents:
Beds exploding was 100% intended by the developers (as a funny way to prevent sleeping in the nether, as opposed to a boring error message.) Minecraft is a sandbox game (the ending may have made it more RPG-like, but it's still sandbox nonetheless) and the enderdragon is a massive challenge with 100+ health. I think any way of killing it would be acceptable.
Of course alex stated that he used Essentials, so, depending on which commands were used, you could classify it as cheating.

With the release of my new adventure map, I am officially back. Now to head back to DragCave!
Exploits in Minecraft are entirely different than exploits in RPGs. Look at XP farms. In RPGs, farming is technically outlawed because it gets you loot fast, cheap and easy. All of these are true in Minecraft, except expediting getting loot from mobs is considered legit, expected even, because anyone who can build a mob spawner on at least a basic level has no reason NOT to farm. Therefore, bed mines aren't exactly an exploit, especially since they've been in the game, the devs know about it, and have not removed it as of yet.
Great point, except the devs are working on ways to remove xp from said farms. I doubt they can do much about the ones that are built, but they absolutely are making standing at a mob spawner found in a dungeon less profitable. It will be in 1.4, it's in the snapshots and has been for a while. The longer you stand there the less xp they drop till it's not worth it after a few minutes.
Blowing the Ender Dragon up with Exploding Beds is not cheating.
Cheating is using an Inventory Editor like TooManyItems to put things in your Inventory.

The Ender dragon can be killed fairly easily with a bow. By using a bed they are only making things harder for themselves. The intended feature of the exploding bed is to blow up the player trying to sleep. And it does. By using the bed to kill the Ender dragon they are putting themselves in a greater risk than if they'd simply faced the dragon head on.
Using exploding beds to kill mobs or to farm resources might not be the intended use of the feature, but I will still not call this an exploit. In the gaming world, exploit, is a negatively charged word used to depict that a player is using a feature to gain some kind of advantage above the norm. That is not the case here. I would say it's the opposite.

I don't know about that, he said the explosion really hurt the dragon a lot. It sounds like it's an advantage to me.
I agree with many here that if it's part of the game mechanics and not some mod, or add on or editing of the game code or world files outside of playing the game it isn't cheating. It's using the game mechanics to your advantage we all do that whether it's simple things like holding shift so you don't fall while doing construction very high up, or mob traps, experience grinders, etc. I've only played the game for roughly a month so I hadn't heard of the bed exploding thing, but if the developers are aware of it and it's been in existence for a long time then why not use it. A big part of this game is about discovery and creativity. I think that's the intent of the game itself. It's one thing if it's a glitch that's not intended and after some time it's patched.
I believe that beds exploding, as they were put in the game, is not an exploit. Infact, it sounds harder than killing it with arrows.
However, it is an extremely creative way to kill the enderdragon, and not very many people would do it. It was put in the game, we may do with it as we please.
(thats like arguing that pistons were not put in the game for making elevators, and that any piston device put not thought of by mojang is cheating.)
An MMO is a lot different than a sandbox in terms of cheating. As an MMO is less open to.. new possibilitys than a sandbox. And many minecraft players don't consider defeating the enderdragon as an end to the game, just as another task, as the game keeps going. I would be surprised if the server owner didnt allow it, and I would be even more suprised if they got punished for it.
Exploding beds may have been put in the game to prevent people from sleeping in the nether and end, but its like lighting tnt, Its an explosion. Does this mean TNT should not be used in the end?
My two cents.

It is said that music can evoke emotion. Pretty powerful stuff, this world.
This not cheating or a exploit in any definition of those two words. Cheating is using TMI or other things that give you a unfair advantage. Is damaging the Ender Dragon with beds that? No. And exploits would probably be the dumber mob AI in the older versions, I saw in a video using a older version of Minecraft and they would just let themselves fall in holes, and I think they used to walk right into cactuses, fire and and I think they used to walk right into lava.
Well, unless for some reason your son found a mod that makes exploding beds extremely overpowered or whatever... It's not considered cheating. The only thing that I consider cheating is using mods that help you, like TooManyItems and Singleplayer Commands.

With help of TMI? (TooManyItems)
On-topic : This is not
That isn't related with codding so...
Very good point about the difference between this and an MMO. +1 to you.
It could matter on a multiplayer server, however, if it was vanilla.
However, it is an extremely creative way to kill the enderdragon, and not very many people would do it. It was put in the game, we may do with it as we please.
