I was tinkering around with the new snapshot, and started a world with Tunneler's Dream. That's the superflat preset with 240 layers of stone. I was surprised to discover that ores do not spawn above layer 128. In a default world this doesn't matter, because terrain doesn't generate up there, ever. But Tunneler's Dream would make a tough challenge map, because you have to dig more than 100m deep just to find coal.
On the plus side, there are trees. But no grass. Anybody want a challenge?

Oh no

No, there's new customizable superflat worlds. It comes with some presets; Tunneler's dream is one of them.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
12w40 has some weird glitches, though. I just wanted to play with the superflat controls. Got me a bigass chunk error, yay!
Yep, it probably will.
That "Tunneler's Dream" does seem pretty interesting. Going to try that out soon.
I said this. Two days later, my computer's motherboard melted down and I had to get a new one with Windows 8.
Irony in the first degree.
